UC San Diego's published admit rate is 26.8% for the most recently reported cycle, with a slightly higher 28.4% for the Class of 2029. Neither number tells the full story. UCSD is a public university operating under a state compact that requires it to grow California resident enrollment every year. A legislative goal caps nonresident undergraduates at no more than 18% of total enrollment by 2026-27. California residents and out-of-state applicants are competing in structurally different pools, and the resident pool is the one the institution is actively expanding.

The second structural fact is major. UCSD has impacted majors, including Computer Science, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, and Data Science, where the effective bar is substantially higher than the campus-wide rate. An applicant selecting CS or Bioengineering is not competing against the full pool; they are competing against a concentrated cohort of STEM-focused applicants with strong records.

The third structural fact is UCSD's eight residential colleges. Revelle, Muir, Marshall, Warren, Eleanor Roosevelt, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth each have distinct general education requirements and intellectual identities. Applicants rank their preferences on the application. College assignment is not a separate admissions decision, but it shapes four years of academic experience. Applicants who have researched the colleges and can articulate why a specific one fits their goals demonstrate a level of engagement that matters in review.

What this school values

Academic rigor in context. UCSD reviews UC-capped weighted GPA in A-G coursework, with additional weight for honors and AP courses. All admitted students in the Class of 2029 came from the top 10% of their high school class. Rigor is the baseline. What differentiates applicants above that floor is everything else.

Trajectory and opportunity context. UC's comprehensive review framework explicitly asks how hard an applicant has worked given the opportunities available. A strong record built under resource constraints reads differently than the same GPA at a well-resourced school. First-generation status, Pell eligibility, and limited school resources are read as context, not deficit.

Depth over breadth in activities. UCSD's admissions documentation consistently emphasizes quality and depth of involvement over the number of activities. Sustained commitments, leadership roles, and self-initiated projects carry more weight than a long list of short-term memberships. Paid employment and family obligations are treated as meaningful equivalents to traditional extracurriculars.

Research-readiness for STEM applicants. UCSD sits inside a research-intensive ecosystem that includes Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Salk Institute. For applicants targeting STEM majors, evidence of research experience, science fair placement, engineering projects, or competition results signals readiness for that environment. Generic STEM enthusiasm without a concrete project or outcome does not.

Maturity, determination, and resilience. UCSD's official review page names these qualities directly, alongside the ability to overcome challenging circumstances. Essays grounded in adversity or navigating complex life situations have a structural opening here that the institution itself validates.

Your own voice across four essays. UCSD is test-blind. There are no interviews. The four Personal Insight Questions are the only place where individual character and voice can be communicated directly. Generic responses that could apply to any UC campus are a documented weakness.

This cycle (2026-27)

UCSD is test-blind. Standardized test scores are not considered in admissions decisions, even if submitted. This is a stronger policy than test-optional: submission carries no positive or negative signal. The review centers on GPA, course rigor, PIQ essays, and extracurricular engagement. UC confirmed in July 2026 that no change to this policy will occur before June 2027, meaning applicants submitting by November 30, 2026 for fall 2027 entry will not be required to submit SAT or ACT scores.

California residents are the priority pool. A state-legislature-mandated goal caps nonresident undergraduates at no more than 18% of total enrollment by 2026-27. UC has grown California resident enrollment every year since 2015. UCSD's slightly higher Class of 2029 admit rate is partly attributable to the institution targeting a larger enrolled class to serve more California residents. The institution is in net-expansion mode for in-state applicants specifically.

Impacted majors compress the effective admit rate. CS, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and several engineering disciplines are impacted at UCSD. Applicants selecting these majors are evaluated against a concentrated cohort. A UC-capped GPA above 4.20 with advanced STEM rigor is the typical profile for competitive applicants in these fields.

First-generation and local outreach is active. UCSD has documented a 55% jump in admitted local San Diego and Imperial County students in a recent cycle, tied to expanded recruitment. First-generation California residents are both a UC system compact priority and an active UCSD outreach target. The Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan covers tuition for California families earning under $80,000.

Demonstrated interest is not tracked. Campus visits, email inquiries, and attendance at information events have no documented effect on outcomes. There are no interviews. The PIQs are the sole channel for communicating individual character.

Deadlines

  • UC Application Window: October 1 through November 30, 2026. This is the only filing period. There are no Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision rounds. All applicants submit during the same window.
  • FAFSA and Cal Grant Priority Date: March 2, 2027. California residents seeking state aid should meet this deadline.
  • Decisions: Posted before the end of March 2027.

Essays

UCSD requires no school-specific supplement. Applicants submit the UC application, which asks for four Personal Insight Questions chosen from a menu of eight prompts. Each response is limited to 350 words. The same four essays go to every UC campus applied to simultaneously.

The eight prompts are: leadership experience; creative side; greatest talent or skill; significant educational opportunity or barrier; most significant challenge; an academic subject that inspires you; what you have done to make your school or community better; and what else makes you a strong UC candidate beyond what has already been shared.

Applicants choose any four. The most commonly chosen are the leadership prompt and the creative side prompt. Prompts three, five, seven, and eight tend to produce more distinctive responses because fewer applicants choose them.

Four essays at 350 words each is a short total word count. Each essay must carry its own weight. Four essays on the same theme or activity tell a reader very little about the full person. The strongest sets cover different dimensions: intellectual engagement, personal context, community contribution, and individual character.

UCSD reads for UCSD-specific fit even though the application is shared across campuses. One PIQ can anchor in a specific UCSD story: a named research lab, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a specific residential college's curricular philosophy, or a faculty member's work. That specificity is the primary way to differentiate within a shared application system.

Each essay is 350 words. Front-loading a specific scene or tension performs better than building slowly to a point. Every sentence must carry weight.

Common misreads

Using the overall admit rate as your odds. The 26.8% to 28.4% rate is a blended figure across all majors and all residency statuses. Out-of-state applicants face a structurally tighter pool. Applicants targeting CS, Bioengineering, or Data Science face a concentrated cohort where the effective bar is substantially higher than the campus-wide number.

Treating the UC application as generic. Because the same application goes to every UC campus, some applicants write PIQs that could apply anywhere. UCSD reads for institutional fit. A PIQ that names a specific UCSD research environment, residential college, or program signals that the applicant has engaged with what UCSD is.

Ignoring the residential college system. Ranking colleges without research reads as low engagement. Each college has a distinct general education structure and intellectual identity. Revelle requires a Western humanities core. Sixth has an interdisciplinary technology focus. An applicant who can articulate why their top-ranked college fits their goals demonstrates a layer of preparation that matters.

Submitting test scores expecting a boost. UCSD is test-blind. Scores are not considered under any circumstances. Submitting them neither helps nor hurts, but applicants who build their case around strong scores are misreading where the review focuses.

Writing four PIQs on the same theme. Four essays that all describe the same activity or the same identity signal leave a reader with an incomplete picture. The set should cover different dimensions of the applicant's life and thinking.

Assuming demonstrated interest matters. It does not. UCSD does not track campus visits, email inquiries, or event attendance. Time spent on demonstrated interest activities is time not spent on the PIQs, which are the only direct channel to the reader.

Notable programs

UCSD does not publish per-major admit rates. The campus-wide rate of 26.8% (most recently reported cycle) and 28.4% (Class of 2029) masks significant variation by major. Impacted majors include Computer Science, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Data Science, and several engineering disciplines. Applicants selecting these fields are evaluated against a concentrated cohort of STEM-focused applicants; the effective bar is substantially higher than the published overall rate.

UCSD's most popular enrolled majors are biology, mathematics, economics, international and global studies, and computer science. The institution's research infrastructure, including Scripps Institution of Oceanography and proximity to the Salk Institute, makes it particularly research-intensive for a public university. Applicants targeting research-heavy fields who can point to concrete research experience, project work, or competition results are better positioned than those who express general interest without evidence.

A post-admission point system for assigning current students to selective majors awards points for California residency and Pell Grant eligibility alongside academic performance. This is a curricular process, not an admissions process, but it reflects the institution's overall priorities around equity and state mission.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
