Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
UC Santa Cruz admitted 65% of applicants in its most recently reported cycle, making it the most accessible of the selective-tier UCs. That headline rate masks real variation. The admissions office reported a 72.7% acceptance rate for fall 2025 first-year applicants, and notes that rates shift year to year with the applicant pool. For fall 2024, out-of-state applicants were admitted at roughly 82% and international applicants at 81%, both well above the California-resident rate of approximately 61%. Non-residents face the most accessible UC pathway at this campus.
UCSC is test-blind. No SAT or ACT score is accepted or considered under any circumstances. The UC Personal Insight Questions, academic record, and course rigor carry the entire review. There is no campus-specific supplement and no interview. The application opens October 1 and closes November 30.
The campus sits in a redwood forest above Monterey Bay. Its founding identity centers on environmental sciences, social justice scholarship, and interdisciplinary inquiry. That identity is not incidental. It shapes how readers interpret PIQs, activities, and academic interests. Applicants who engage with it read differently from those who treat UCSC as an interchangeable UC option.
Academic record in context. UCSC applies the UC system's 13 faculty-approved comprehensive review criteria, which evaluate achievement relative to the opportunities available. An applicant who maximized a limited course menu reads differently from one at a well-resourced school with the same GPA. The PIQs are the primary vehicle for surfacing that context.
Alignment with the campus's intellectual identity. UCSC's founding mission centers on environmental sciences, social justice, and interdisciplinary inquiry. Readers look for PIQs that reflect genuine engagement with those themes, whether through ecology, feminist studies, environmental policy, community organizing, or research. Generic achievement narratives without that texture read as low-fit.
Resilience and response to challenge. The UC comprehensive review criteria explicitly include how students have responded to life challenges. With approximately 36% first-generation students and 40% Pell-eligible students in recent classes, this dimension of review is actively exercised. Specificity matters more than the scale of the obstacle.
Research and intellectual curiosity. UCSC joined the Association of American Universities in 2019. PIQs that describe genuine research experience, scientific curiosity, or creative intellectual work align with what the campus is structurally investing in. The residential college structure, with 10 colleges each carrying its own faculty and curriculum, rewards applicants who demonstrate community engagement alongside academic interest.
Social impact orientation. UCSC ranks among the top social-mobility institutions nationally. Community service, environmental activism, and civic engagement are read as evidence of campus-community fit, not as extracurricular filler.
UCSC is test-blind. No SAT or ACT score is submitted, reviewed, or considered. This is a structural condition, not a cycle-specific choice. The UC system confirmed in July 2026 that there has been no change to UC's standardized testing policy for students applying by November 30, 2026 for fall 2027 entry. A UC Academic Senate review is expected to produce a policy recommendation no later than June 2027, after this cycle's decisions are issued.
Applications surged. UCSC received 92,333 applications for fall 2026, an 18.7% increase year over year, the largest surge of any UC campus. That volume does not automatically compress the admit rate, but it raises the importance of PIQ quality for applicants near the GPA thresholds where compression already exists.
GPA thresholds are real. Published admit-rate data by GPA band shows UCSC admits approximately 92% of applicants with a UC-capped weighted GPA of 4.00 or above, 71% at 3.70 to 3.99, 37% at 3.30 to 3.69, and 11% at 3.00 to 3.29. The overall 65% rate does not apply uniformly. California residents below 3.30 face meaningful denial risk without strong PIQ context.
Non-resident advantage is documented. Fall 2024 out-of-state admit rate was approximately 82% and international was 81%, against roughly 61% for California residents. UCSC is actively expanding out-of-state and international recruitment as an institutional priority.
Impacted majors admit below the campus average. Computer Science admits at a meaningfully lower rate than the campus headline. The admissions office notes this explicitly in its FAQ. The 13-criterion comprehensive review applies to all applicants regardless of major.
UCSC uses the UC application exclusively. There is no campus-specific supplement and no Why UCSC prompt. Applicants choose four of eight Personal Insight Questions (PIQs) and answer each in up to 350 words. These four responses are the only essay materials readers have.
The eight prompts are:
Because UCSC is test-blind and has no supplement, PIQ quality is the primary differentiating variable among applicants with similar academic profiles. Depth on one question outperforms breadth spread thin. PIQs that engage with environmental, social-justice, or interdisciplinary themes find a specific institutional audience at UCSC. Prompts 4, 5, and 7 are particularly well-suited to surfacing the context and community orientation that UCSC's comprehensive review is designed to capture.
Using the overall admit rate as a personal probability. The 65% campus rate blends very different GPA bands. California residents below a 3.30 UC-capped GPA face roughly 11% admission. The headline number does not apply uniformly.
Treating UCSC as an interchangeable fallback UC. PIQs that could have been written for any campus, with no engagement with UCSC's environmental, social-justice, or interdisciplinary identity, read as low-fit to readers who are actively looking for that alignment.
Assuming test scores can help. UCSC is test-blind. Scores are not submitted, not reviewed, and cannot offset a weaker academic record. Applicants who would benefit from score submission at other campuses have no such option here.
Ignoring GPA compression at the lower end. UCSC is accessible, but not unconditionally. A sub-3.30 UC-capped GPA without strong PIQ context and a clear trajectory narrative carries real denial risk even at this campus.
Skipping residential college research. UCSC's 10 residential colleges each have distinct identities, faculty, and curriculum requirements. Applicants who rank colleges thoughtfully signal engagement with how the campus works. Those who leave rankings arbitrary signal the opposite.
Assuming computer science admits at the campus rate. CS is an impacted major at UCSC. The admissions office explicitly notes that impacted majors admit at meaningfully lower rates than the campus average.
UCSC does not publish per-major admit rates. The admissions office confirms that computer science is an impacted major with a meaningfully lower admit rate than the campus average. Other programs in environmental studies, ecology and evolutionary biology, feminist studies, and the arts reflect the campus's founding strengths and are well-resourced relative to campus size.
UCSC's 10 residential colleges are not academic divisions; they do not admit separately. Each has its own faculty, core course requirement, and community identity. Applicants rank their college preferences on the UC application. The ranking does not determine admission but affects housing and community placement.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
