Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
UC Irvine's published admit rate is 29%. Most applicants do not face that number. California residents are admitted at roughly 22%; out-of-state applicants have historically been admitted at roughly 49-50%, and international applicants at roughly 43%. Those figures are Class of 2028 and Class of 2029 vintage, but the structural gap has been consistent across cycles. If you are applying from outside California, UCI is materially more accessible than its overall rate suggests.
There is no Early Action or Early Decision. All applicants compete in a single cycle with a November 30 filing deadline. There are no interviews, no letters of recommendation, and no demonstrated-interest tracking. The Personal Insight Questions are the only place you can convey voice, character, and context. That makes them more consequential here than at most selective schools.
UCI is also one of the leading public universities in the country for first-generation and Pell-eligible enrollment. Roughly half of first-year students are first-generation college students. That is not a marketing claim; it reflects how the institution reads applications and distributes aid. About 72% of students receive grants or scholarships, and 57% pay no tuition at all.
Academic rigor and GPA, read in context. UCI is permanently test-blind. No SAT or ACT scores are considered. GPA and course rigor are the sole academic filter. The middle 50% UC-weighted capped GPA for the Class of 2029 was 4.04 to 4.27, with a median of 4.19. Because GPAs cluster tightly at this level, readers calibrate against what was available at your school, not against a universal standard.
Uniqueness alongside achievement. UCI's own admissions office frames the question as what distinguishes you from everyone else regardless of GPA. With over 95% of enrolled students ranking in the top decile of their class, differentiation must come from the qualitative dimensions of the application.
Essays, talent, activities, and work experience. UCI formally ranks application essays, talent and ability, extracurricular activities, volunteer experience, and work experience as equally very important factors alongside GPA and rigor. Character and personal qualities are listed as important but one tier below. This is an unusual weighting that places essays on the same level as your academic record.
Effort within your context. The UC Office of the President's comprehensive review language asks readers to consider how hard you have worked to take advantage of the opportunities available to you. First-generation status, limited school resources, and family obligations are read as context, not deficit.
Fit with a specific program. ICS impacted majors compress admit rates well below 29%. Readers expect evidence of technical preparation, not just stated interest. For any impacted major, the PIQs and activity list need to show the work, not just the aspiration.
UCI is permanently test-blind. The University of California adopted a test-blind policy beginning with the Class of 2025. No SAT or ACT scores are considered for admission or scholarships at UCI. As of July 22, 2026, UC confirmed no change to this policy will occur before June 2027. Students applying by November 30, 2026 for fall 2027 will not be required to submit scores.
One filing window, no early rounds. The UC application opens October 1 and closes November 30, 2026. UCI offers no Early Action, Early Decision, or priority deadline. All applicants are reviewed together.
Out-of-state applicants have a structural advantage. UCI has difficulty yielding full-pay non-resident students, which produces a consistently higher admit rate for out-of-state and international applicants. This is an enrollment management reality, not a quality signal. OOS applicants who do not engage UCI specifically in their PIQs still benefit from the rate differential, but those who demonstrate genuine fit are better positioned to yield.
ICS impacted majors compress rates significantly. The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences is one of only a handful of standalone computing schools in the UC system. CS, Data Science, Software Engineering, Informatics, and related majors are impacted. Applicants selecting these majors face a substantially higher bar than the overall 29% implies. A UC-capped GPA above 4.00 is the practical floor for competitive consideration.
Transfer Admission Guarantee expanded for fall 2027. California community college students can apply for a TAG guarantee through September 30, 2026. For fall 2027, UCI expanded TAG eligibility to include all ICS majors alongside Art, Business Administration, Dance, Music, and Nursing Science. Transfer admission overall ran 39.5% for the Class of 2029.
UCI uses the University of California's Personal Insight Question format. Applicants choose four of eight prompts and write up to 350 words per response. There are no supplements, no school-specific essays, and no interviews. The eight prompts are:
At 350 words per response, economy matters. Readers process over 124,000 applications. The central point of each response needs to land on first read. Front-loading anecdote at the expense of reflection is a common structural mistake.
Read your four responses as a set before submitting. The strongest applications use each PIQ to illuminate a different dimension: academic curiosity, community identity, resilience, a distinctive skill or perspective. Four responses that orbit the same activity or theme leave the reader with a narrow picture.
ICS applicants should ensure at least one PIQ articulates technical depth or quantitative specificity, not just interest in computing.
Using the overall 29% as your odds. California residents face roughly 22%. Out-of-state applicants face roughly 49-50%. ICS impacted majors compress rates further regardless of residency. The blended rate describes almost no one's actual situation.
Treating UCI as interchangeable with UCSD or UCSB. UCI has a distinct institutional identity built around first-generation mobility, the standalone ICS school, and social ecology. PIQs that read as generic Southern California UC applications, with no engagement with UCI-specific programs or culture, signal low effort to readers who know the difference.
Selecting an impacted ICS major without the supporting record. A UC-capped GPA below 4.00 combined with an ICS major selection puts an applicant in a pool where the admit rate drops sharply. The Class of 2029 data shows 46% admitted at 4.00 or above, 17% at 3.70 to 3.99, and 3% at 3.30 to 3.69. Major selection is a consequential choice, not a preference field.
Assuming no test scores means no academic bar. Test-blind does not mean academically open. GPA and course rigor carry the full weight of the academic review. The median UC-weighted GPA for admitted students is 4.19.
Writing four PIQs about the same thing. Readers see the full set. Four responses that all center on the same sport, club, or identity dimension produce a one-dimensional application at a school that explicitly values uniqueness alongside achievement.
UCI does not publish per-major admit rates. The structural facts that matter most are which majors are impacted and what the GPA distribution looks like across the admitted class.
The Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences is a standalone school and one of the most selective entry points at UCI. Impacted majors within ICS include Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, and Computer Game Science. Applicants to these majors need a strong quantitative record, demonstrated programming or project experience, and PIQs that articulate specific technical interest.
Engineering majors are also impacted, with selectivity varying by discipline. Biological Sciences, Business Administration, and Nursing are high-demand programs with their own competitive dynamics.
The School of Social Ecology, which houses Criminology, Public Health Policy, and Urban Studies, reflects UCI's distinctive academic identity and is less commonly understood by applicants outside California. It is a genuine differentiator for applicants whose interests align with it.
For California community college students, the TAG expansion for fall 2027 makes all ICS majors newly eligible for guaranteed admission, a significant change for transfer applicants pursuing computing fields.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
Every college values different qualities. See how your profile aligns, then go as deep as you want.
