Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo admits by major. Every applicant declares an intended major on the Cal State Apply application, and every applicant competes against other applicants in that same major, not against the full pool. The headline admit rate of 31.3% is a blend across all majors. Your real number depends entirely on which major you choose.
That structure is the most important fact about Cal Poly admissions. Psychology admitted roughly 2% of applicants in a recent cycle. Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering admitted roughly 30%. Both figures come from the same institution in the same year. The spread is not a quirk; it is how the system is designed.
The second structural fact: Cal Poly uses a quantitative formula called the Multi-Criteria Admission score. It weights high school GPA from 9th through 11th grade, course rigor, and major-specific coursework. Essays, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities are not considered in the standard first-year admission decision. This makes Cal Poly fundamentally different from the holistic-review schools many applicants also apply to.
Cal Poly is transitioning from a quarter calendar to a semester calendar beginning Fall 2026. Students entering in Fall 2026 are the first cohort under the new semester structure.
Academic rigor in the right subjects. Cal Poly's GPA is calculated from 9th through 11th grade college-prep coursework only, with weight for AP, IB, honors, and college-level courses up to eight semesters. The average weighted GPA of selected students in the 2025 cycle was 4.06. For STEM majors, the formula explicitly rewards additional math and science depth beyond minimum requirements: Calculus BC, Physics, Chemistry, and related AP coursework carry real weight.
Major-specific course completion. Cal Poly's selection rubric rewards coursework that aligns with the declared major. Engineering applicants who have completed calculus and physics are better positioned than those who have not. Biology applicants who have completed AP Chemistry and AP Biology are better positioned than those who stopped at general science. The formula is not just about grades; it is about which courses those grades came from.
Authentic fit with the declared major. Cal Poly's admissions office states that applicants compete within their declared major. Readers screen for alignment between the applicant's academic record and the major they chose. An engineering-shaped transcript applying to Wine and Viticulture, or a pre-med record applying to Agricultural Communications, reads as a mismatch. The institution describes itself as selecting students who want to build and make, not only study, consistent with its Learn by Doing model.
Applied and hands-on engagement. Cal Poly's institutional identity is the polytechnic model: labs, fabrication shops, studios, and working farms from the first year. Evidence of hands-on work in the relevant field, robotics, rocketry, research, farm or vineyard experience, software projects, carries weight as a signal of fit with that model.
No essays, no recommendations. Cal Poly's Common Data Set confirms that application essays, recommendations, and extracurricular activities are not considered in the standard first-year admission decision. Time spent on essay polish does not improve odds here. Time spent on additional rigorous coursework does.
Testing is not considered. Cal Poly SLO is test blind for first-year admission. Submitting SAT or ACT scores does not help or hurt the application. The decision rests on GPA, course rigor, and major-specific coursework.
Application volume is at record levels. Cal Poly received 81,899 applications in the 2025 cycle for approximately 22,531 selected spots, an overall selection rate of roughly 27.5% that cycle. The institution described the volume as reflecting growing demand for its Learn by Doing model. Competition is increasing across all majors.
Enrollment is expanding. Cal Poly is executing a plan to grow total enrollment to roughly 25,000 students by 2030, an increase of about 2,000 students over five years. The university is also adding year-round operations in summer 2027 to support the larger population. More seats may modestly ease pressure in some majors over time.
Transfer pathways are substantial. Roughly 20% of Cal Poly's new student cohort each year comes through transfer. California Community College transfer applicants who complete major-specific lower-division coursework per ASSIST articulation agreements are well positioned. Cuesta College, the local Central Coast community college, had a 53.8% transfer admit rate to Cal Poly in the 2025 cycle against an overall transfer rate of 18.8%.
Financial aid priority deadline is March 2. For need-based aid consideration, the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application must be filed by March 2.
Cal Poly does not read personal statements or essays as part of the standard first-year admission decision. The application is submitted through Cal State Apply, not the Common App. The data fields that matter are coursework, grades, GPA self-report, work and educational experience, and intended major.
One exception: Art and Design applicants are required to submit an electronic portfolio. For those programs, the portfolio is the primary creative submission and functions the way an essay might at a holistic-review school.
For all other majors, the most consequential thing an applicant writes on the application is the intended major. That choice determines the pool you compete in and the coursework the formula evaluates you against. It deserves more deliberation than any essay prompt.
Treating Cal Poly like a holistic-review school. Applicants who invest heavily in essay polish, recommendation cultivation, and extracurricular narrative are optimizing for factors Cal Poly does not weigh. The same time spent completing an additional AP science or math course would have a measurable effect on the MCA score.
Using the 31.3% headline rate as a planning number. That figure blends majors that admit 2% of applicants with majors that admit 30%. The only rate that matters is the one for your declared major. Psychology, Biological Sciences, and Aerospace Engineering are each roughly ten times more selective than the headline suggests.
Choosing a less-impacted major as a back door. Cal Poly readers screen for alignment between the applicant's record and the declared major. An engineering-shaped transcript applying to Wine and Viticulture, or a pre-med record applying to Agricultural Communications, reads as a mismatch. The institution explicitly states that authentic fit with the major is part of what it is selecting for.
Assuming a strong GPA is enough. The MCA formula weights which courses the grades came from, not just the grades themselves. A 4.0 in a schedule light on math and science does not score the same as a 4.0 with Calculus BC, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry for a STEM major. Course depth matters as much as grade attainment.
Submitting test scores expecting them to help. Cal Poly is test blind. Scores are not reviewed. They do not compensate for a thinner academic record.
Major-specific admit rates from the Fall 2025 cycle (reported as cycle 2028 in institutional data) show the full range of selectivity at Cal Poly. These figures are from Cal Poly's Office for Institutional Research and should be treated as recent benchmarks, not guaranteed current rates.
The College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences is Cal Poly's least-impacted college overall. The College of Engineering and the Bailey College of Science and Mathematics are the most impacted. Architecture requires a separate portfolio review. Art and Design requires an electronic portfolio.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
