Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
UC Davis's published admit rate for fall 2026 entry is approximately 42%. That number obscures a split that matters more to most readers. For fall 2024, out-of-state applicants were admitted at roughly 58% while California residents came in near 40%. Davis actively pursues non-resident enrollment for geographic diversity and net tuition revenue, making it one of the few UC campuses where out-of-state applicants hold a structural advantage over in-state peers.
Davis is also a land-grant research university with the top-ranked agriculture program in the country, a veterinary school, and a 5,300-acre campus that includes a working teaching farm. That identity is not incidental to admissions. Applicants whose record connects to agriculture, sustainability, food systems, or environmental science read differently here than they would at Berkeley or UCLA. Davis is not a fallback UC. It is a specific place with a specific mission, and the admissions process reflects that.
The UC application has no early decision or early action round. Everyone applies through the same November window. There are no supplemental essays. The Personal Insight Questions are the primary differentiator in a pool that reached 122,271 applications for fall 2026.
Academic rigor and GPA first. UC Davis's Common Data Set ranks rigor of secondary record and GPA as the two factors rated Very Important. Readers evaluate course selection against what was available at the applicant's school, not against a national standard. A student who took every rigorous course offered at an under-resourced school reads differently than one who avoided challenge at a well-resourced one.
Context as a cornerstone. The UC system states explicitly that context is a cornerstone of comprehensive review. Davis's own review criteria list first-generation status, low family income, need to work, disadvantaged educational environments, refugee status, and veteran status as factors under criterion 12. These are not tiebreakers. They are named criteria that frame how academic performance is read.
Fit with Davis's identity. Davis's land-grant agricultural and sustainability mission anchors its admissions culture. Applicants with sustained engagement in agriculture, food systems, environmental science, or veterinary medicine connect to what Davis does that no other UC does at the same level. That connection, when it appears in the PIQs, carries weight.
Authentic voice in the PIQs. UC Davis Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions Robert Penman has participated in a UC systemwide series emphasizing authenticity in personal insight questions. With no test scores in the file and no letters of recommendation, readers rely on PIQs and course pattern more heavily than is typical at comparably selective private universities. Generic responses that could apply to any UC campus do not differentiate.
Community contribution. Activities are read for sustained engagement and impact, not prestige. PIQ prompt 7 asks directly what the applicant has done to improve their school or community. Readers expect a concrete answer.
UC Davis is test-blind. SAT and ACT scores are not considered for admission or scholarships. This policy has been in place since the Class of 2025 and applies to the 2026-27 cycle. The UC system confirmed in July 2026 that no change to testing policy will take effect before June 2027, after this cycle's decisions are made. Submitting scores does not help and does not hurt; they are not read.
Applications are at record volume. Davis received 122,271 applications for fall 2026, up 1.8% from the prior record. The campus aims to enroll approximately 9,100 new first-year and transfer students. At that scale, holistic differentiators, especially PIQ quality and senior-year rigor, matter more at the margin than they did when the pool was smaller.
Out-of-state applicants hold a structural advantage. Davis manages enrollment toward a roughly 2:1 California-to-non-resident ratio. For fall 2024 the campus was slightly above that target, meaning non-resident admits were actively sought. The OOS admit rate of approximately 58% for fall 2024 reflects that structural priority.
Selective majors raise the effective floor. The 42% overall rate aggregates across all majors, including non-impacted ones. Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Biological Sciences variants admit at rates well below the headline figure. Applicants to those programs face a materially higher bar.
Special-talent pathways exist. Davis has formal supplemental review for intercollegiate athletics, music, and ROTC. Applications in those categories receive additional evaluation from designated campus personnel beyond the standard holistic score.
UC Davis requires no supplemental essays. Applicants choose four Personal Insight Questions from the eight UC system prompts below, with each response capped at 350 words.
The 350-word ceiling is tight. Responses that try to cover multiple experiences in one prompt typically fail to give readers a concrete picture. One specific moment or project, developed with precision, outperforms a survey of accomplishments.
Because the UC application is shared across all campuses, Davis-specific fit must come through the substance of what you write, not through a dedicated why-us prompt. Readers infer fit from whether your PIQs connect to Davis's identity: its land-grant mission, agricultural and sustainability programs, or rural research culture. A response that could have been written for any UC campus does not signal Davis fit. Davis does not consider demonstrated interest, so campus visits and emails to the admissions office carry no weight.
Using the 42% rate as your personal odds. That figure blends all majors and all residency categories. Out-of-state applicants in non-impacted majors face a very different pool than California residents applying to Computer Science or Engineering. Know which pool you are in.
Treating Davis as a backup to Berkeley or UCLA. PIQs written without any engagement with Davis's agricultural identity, land-grant mission, or specific programs read as generic UC applications. Readers see this pattern in a pool of over 120,000 applications. It does not help at the margin.
Assuming test scores matter. Davis is test-blind. Scores are not read. Spending application energy on score reporting or score explanation is wasted. That energy belongs in the PIQs and senior-year course selection.
Spreading PIQs too thin. Choosing four prompts that each cover a different surface-level achievement produces a file without a coherent picture. Readers have 350 words per response and no letters of recommendation to fill in the gaps. Depth in fewer themes reads better than breadth across many.
Ignoring the GPA floor in selective majors. Published data shows Davis admitted 64% of applicants with a UC-capped weighted GPA above 4.00 and 28% of those between 3.70 and 3.99 for fall 2024. In impacted majors the effective floor is higher still. The headline admit rate does not apply uniformly.
UC Davis has three undergraduate colleges: Letters and Science, Engineering, and the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Applicants apply to a specific major within one of these colleges. The overall admit rate does not apply equally across majors.
Computer Science, Computer Science and Engineering, and Engineering majors are impacted and admit at rates well below the 42% headline. Biological Sciences variants are also more selective than the aggregate suggests. The College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, which houses Davis's nationally ranked agriculture, environmental science, and food science programs, is the college most directly aligned with Davis's land-grant identity and reads applicants with relevant background favorably.
Per-major admit rates are not published by Davis. The GPA distribution data above (fall 2024 vintage) is the best available proxy for the effective floor by academic strength. Applicants to impacted majors should treat the headline rate as a ceiling, not a floor.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
