Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
UC Riverside's published admit rate is 76.9%. That number is real, but it obscures a structural fact that matters more to most readers of this page: the out-of-state admit rate in the most recent Common Data Set (2024-25) is 91%, compared to 75% for California residents. That inversion is unusual in the UC system, where flagship campuses like UCLA and UC Berkeley admit out-of-state applicants at rates far below in-state. At UCR, the dynamic runs the other way.
The reason is clear. UCR's out-of-state applicant pool is small. The campus's access mission is oriented toward California residents, particularly from the Inland Empire. Out-of-state applicants who choose UCR deliberately, for a specific program or research opportunity, are not competing in a large national pool. They are a small group, and most are admitted.
The second structural fact: UCR is test-blind. SAT and ACT scores are not used in admissions decisions or scholarship awards. The entire qualitative case rests on GPA, course rigor, and four Personal Insight Questions chosen from eight UC-system prompts. There are no letters of recommendation in the UC application.
UCR has ranked No. 1 nationally for social mobility in U.S. News five of the past seven years. More than half of its most recent incoming class received Pell Grants. That is not aspirational language. It describes the student body the admissions office recruits and enrolls.
Academic GPA and course rigor. UCR's Common Data Set lists academic GPA as "Very Important" and rigor of secondary record as "Important." The average high school GPA for admitted students is 3.83 unweighted. Rigor is read relative to what the applicant's school offered. A 4.0 with only minimum A-G coverage at a school that offered substantial AP or dual enrollment reads differently than the same GPA with maximum rigor taken.
Life experience and context. UCR's comprehensive review calculates an Academic Index Score and then situates it within the context of the student's school environment and available opportunities. Applicants from under-resourced schools who maximized what was available are not compared directly against applicants from highly resourced environments.
Character and community contribution. The application essay is listed as "Important" in UCR's review criteria. Because there are no letters of recommendation in the UC application, the four PIQs are the only place character, persistence, and community engagement can be demonstrated. UCR's admissions office asks applicants to reflect on how they would add to the Highlander community. Leadership and service in resource-limited or underrepresented contexts carry weight here.
Social mobility identity. UCR is a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, with more than 51% of undergraduates identifying as Hispanic or Latino. It also holds AANAPISI designation. These are not demographic statistics. They reflect active programmatic commitments and shape how the admissions office builds each class. Applicants whose narratives connect to first-generation experience, HSI community membership, or service to the Inland Empire fit UCR's review frame.
Specific program fit. UCR's review rewards applicants who engage with the campus's actual programs, research centers, and identity rather than treating UCR as an anonymous UC option. Undergraduate Admissions Director Veronica Zendejas has framed UCR's admission expansion as intentional and student-centered, not as capacity stretch.
Test-blind, confirmed for this cycle. UCR does not use SAT or ACT scores in admissions or scholarship decisions. The UC system's Academic Senate is reviewing testing policy with a report due February 2027 and a Regents recommendation expected no earlier than June 2027. That review does not affect applicants filing by November 30, 2026 for fall 2027 entry. This cycle is test-blind.
Record application volume. UCR received more than 87,000 applications for fall 2026, a record high. The campus admitted 74,340 students for fall 2026, also a record, up from 71,069 the prior year. Chancellor S. Jack Hu described the growth as intentional. Rising application volume means the review process is becoming more competitive even as the access mission holds.
Minimum GPA thresholds differ by residency. California residents must meet a minimum A-G GPA of 3.0. Non-California residents must meet 3.4. This differential applies before comprehensive review begins. Grades from 10th and 11th grade are used for GPA calculation; 9th and 12th grade courses can satisfy A-G subject requirements but not the GPA floor.
Transfer pathways are expanding. UCR's Road to Riverside program provides a structured transfer route for students not admitted as first-year applicants. UCR and the Riverside Community College District held a joint leadership meeting in spring 2026 to expand transfer pathways further. First-year applicants who are not admitted have a defined alternative route.
UCR uses the standard UC application. Applicants choose 4 of the following 8 Personal Insight Questions, each answered in 350 words or fewer. All four receive equal weight in review. No single prompt is more important than another.
Because UCR is test-blind, the PIQs carry the full qualitative weight of the application. Readers look for concrete grounded narratives: a specific moment, a real problem, a sustained commitment. The four prompts you choose should each add a distinct dimension. Repeating the same theme across multiple answers wastes the space. The UC application also includes an optional additional information field, which is worth using to explain school context, unusual course choices, or life circumstances that the PIQs did not cover.
Treating the 76.9% rate as a guaranteed admit. The headline rate is a blend. Impacted majors including computer science, biology, business administration, and bioengineering admit at rates well below the campus average. Applicants with strong GPAs who submit perfunctory PIQs are denied at higher rates than the overall number suggests. The PIQs are the application at every UC campus.
Submitting PIQs written for UCLA or UC Berkeley unchanged. UCR readers can detect when a PIQ was written for a more selective campus and submitted without revision. The absence of UCR-specific grounding, whether a named program, the Highlander community, the Inland Empire context, or the campus's research identity, is a signal that the applicant did not engage with UCR specifically.
Assuming GPA alone is sufficient. UCR's review weights rigor against what the applicant's school offered. A high GPA with only minimum A-G coverage at a school that offered substantial advanced coursework is not the same as the same GPA earned with maximum rigor. For impacted majors, rigor is a meaningful differentiator.
Out-of-state applicants treating UCR as an anonymous safety. The 91% OOS admit rate reflects a small, self-selected pool of applicants who chose UCR deliberately. An OOS application with generic UC framing and no engagement with UCR's programs or identity does not benefit from that structural advantage in the same way.
Overlooking the additional information field. The UC application's optional additional information section is the only place to explain circumstances the PIQs did not address. Applicants from under-resourced schools, with interrupted coursework, or with significant family obligations should use it.
UCR does not publish per-college or per-major admit rates. The campus-wide rate of 76.9% does not apply uniformly across programs. Computer science, biology, bioengineering, and business administration are described in UCR's own materials as impacted majors, meaning demand exceeds available seats and review is more selective than the headline rate implies.
UCR's colleges include the Bourns College of Engineering, the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Education, and the School of Public Policy. The campus also holds both HSI and AANAPISI designations, which shape programmatic emphasis and faculty recruitment across departments.
The Road to Riverside transfer pathway is available for students not admitted as first-year applicants, with structured routes into most majors. The Bridge to PhD program, launched in 2026, expands pathways to graduate research for undergraduates.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
