Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Purdue's published admit rate is 49.8% overall. That number obscures the split that matters most. For the Class of 2028, Indiana residents were admitted at 74% and out-of-state applicants at 45%, a differential President Mung Chiang disclosed publicly in fall 2024. If you live outside Indiana, plan against 45%, not 49.8%.
The second structural fact is college-level selectivity. Purdue admits into specific colleges and majors, and the ranges are wide. First-Year Engineering admitted roughly 46% of its applicants in fall 2024. Computer Science is estimated materially tighter, around 20 to 30%. The College of Education admitted about 70% in the Class of 2029. The overall rate is a blend of all of them.
Purdue is Indiana's land-grant STEM flagship. Its identity is built around applied knowledge, workforce pipelines, and one of the largest co-op systems in the country. That identity shapes what the admissions office reads for, at every selectivity level.
Purdue's official first-year criteria page says applications are reviewed individually and holistically, with focus on two factors: academic preparedness for the desired program and competitiveness within the applicant pool for that program. Both matter. A strong general record that does not match the major you named is not the same as a strong record for that major.
Rigor in the right subjects. For Engineering and CS, that means calculus, physics, and lab science completed before senior year, not planned. For Agriculture, it means field-specific engagement, not general biology interest. For Education, it means classroom experience, not a vague interest in helping people.
Project-based evidence of fit. Purdue's land-grant identity rewards applicants who build things, deploy things, or measure outcomes. Competition placements, fabricated hardware, open-source contributions, FFA project records, and co-op-adjacent work all read as evidence of fit. Stated interest without demonstrated engagement does not.
A clear intended major. Purdue admits by college and major. The review compares you to the pool for your specific program. Vague or inconsistent major framing is a liability, not a neutral choice.
Early Action timing. Merit scholarships, the John Martinson Honors College, and priority consideration for competitive majors all require the November 1 EA deadline. There is no separate scholarship application. EA is the default for any applicant who wants full consideration.
Test scores. Purdue requires SAT or ACT scores. Scores are read as a signal of major-fit readiness, particularly in Engineering and CS, where the admitted mid-50% SAT ranges run 1370 to 1510 and 1420 to 1540 respectively.
Testing is required. Purdue reinstated the SAT or ACT requirement for fall 2024 entry and continues it this cycle. A complete application must include scores. This distinguishes Purdue from several Big Ten peers that remain test-optional.
Indiana Resident Admissions pathway is new. Beginning with spring 2026 graduates, Indiana high school seniors who earn the Enrollment Honors Plus Seal are guaranteed admission to Purdue West Lafayette or Purdue Indianapolis. A complete application, including test scores, must be submitted by November 1.
Purdue Indianapolis is expanding. The Indianapolis campus opened in 2024 with a Hard-Tech Corridor initiative focused on AI, biomedical engineering, data science, and sports technology. The campus-choice question in the supplement is a real essay opportunity for applicants with genuine reasons to prefer an urban, industry-connected setting.
STEM applications continue to climb. Engineering received more than 28,000 applications in 2024-25 alone. The out-of-state pool for Engineering and CS is national and self-selected for STEM strength. OOS applicants to these programs face a materially tighter bar than the school-overall rate suggests.
DEI programming has been restructured. In May 2025, Purdue closed its Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging. Programs such as the Multicultural Engineering Program were rebranded under the Office of the Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and repositioned to serve all students. Cultural centers remain open. Applicants should be aware this institutional shift is in effect for the 2026-27 cycle.
Purdue requires two 250-word supplements in addition to the Common App personal statement.
Prompt 1: How will opportunities at Purdue support your interests, both in and out of the classroom?
Prompt 2: Briefly discuss your reasons for choosing your major and your interest in studying at this campus location (Indianapolis or West Lafayette).
Both prompts reward specificity. Generic praise of Purdue's engineering reputation consistently underperforms. Readers respond to named resources: a specific faculty lab, the Office of Professional Practice, a named co-op partner, the Zucrow Laboratories, or a specific Indianapolis industry partnership. The word limit is tight at 250 words each. Every sentence should carry information the reader cannot infer from your transcript.
The most effective approach to Prompt 2 opens with a personal moment that established your connection to the field, then connects that experience to specific Purdue offerings. Essays that lead with rankings or reputation read as externally motivated.
Applicants to the John Martinson Honors College must complete two additional 500-word essays on intellectual ambition and vision for the honors experience. These are evaluated separately and expect substantive arguments, not variations on the standard supplements.
Purdue's essays are rated very important in its Common Data Set. In a pool of 60,000 to 86,000 applications, they are one of the primary differentiating inputs among applicants with similar academic profiles.
Using the overall admit rate as your odds. Out-of-state applicants face roughly 45%, not 49.8%. OOS applicants to Engineering or CS face a rate materially tighter than that. The blended number is not your number.
Applying Regular Decision to a competitive major. Engineering, CS, Nursing, and Professional Flight Technology fill substantially from the EA pool. RD applicants to these programs may find reduced space or face higher effective selectivity from the remaining seats. EA is not optional for competitive majors.
Strong stats without project evidence in Engineering or CS. The OOS Engineering pool is full of 1450-plus SAT, 4.0 GPA applicants. Purdue's review reads specifically for project-based evidence of major fit. A strong transcript and a general interest essay do not differentiate in that pool.
Treating Agriculture or Education as a low-selectivity back door. Purdue's admissions office reads for genuine field interest. An applicant whose transcript, activities, and essays point to Engineering but who lists Agriculture as their major reads as exactly that to the committee.
Writing a reusable Big Ten engineering supplement. Purdue readers identify substitution templates from Illinois, Michigan State, and Ohio State quickly. Purdue's specific identity, co-op-heavy, tuition-frozen, Indianapolis-expanding, STEM-workforce-pipeline-focused, should be specifically referenced, not implied.
Assuming the test-optional era continues. Purdue reinstated the SAT or ACT requirement for fall 2024 entry. Withholding scores is not a strategic option. A complete application requires scores.
Admit rates below are from the Class of 2028 or Class of 2029 data as noted; they are not current-cycle figures.
First-Year Engineering admitted approximately 46.1% of applicants in fall 2024 (Class of 2028). Admitted students had a mid-50% SAT range of 1370 to 1510, ACT 31 to 34, and GPA 3.81 to 4.0. Engineering subdisciplines are declared in the second year; the admission decision is to First-Year Engineering specifically.
Computer Science does not publish a separate admit rate. Class of 2028 admitted CS students had a mid-50% SAT range of 1420 to 1540 and GPA 3.80 to 4.0. Secondary sources estimate the CS admit rate in the range of 20 to 30%, materially below FYE. CS carries a priority application deadline.
College of Agriculture admitted approximately 55.8% of applicants in the Class of 2029. Mid-50% SAT 1120 to 1310, ACT 25 to 31, GPA 3.71 to 4.0. Indiana 4-H and FFA pipeline applicants are well-positioned here.
College of Education admitted approximately 70.5% of applicants in the Class of 2029. Mid-50% SAT 1010 to 1210, ACT 22 to 29, GPA 3.47 to 4.0. The least selective entry point at Purdue.
Daniels School of Business (formerly Krannert) does not publish a separate admit rate. Purdue describes business selectivity as broadly in line with the school overall, though demand has tightened in recent cycles. Treat the school-overall rate as the baseline estimate.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
