UCLA's published admit rate for fall 2025 entry was 8.9%. That number masks a split that matters more to most readers. California residents were admitted at 9.6%; out-of-state applicants at 11.2%. Those figures sound close, but the pools are not. UCLA carries a statutory mandate to serve California, and the UC system enforces that priority structurally. Out-of-state applicants compete in a compressed national pool against a much higher bar than the headline rate implies.

The second structural fact is that UCLA admits directly into specific schools and, within Engineering, into specific majors. Computer Science admitted 4.1% of applicants in fall 2024. Nursing admitted under 1%. Film and Television admitted 1.1%. The overall rate is a blend of those extremes. Your real pool is the program you named on the application.

UCLA received nearly 147,000 applications for fall 2026, the most of any four-year university in the country. Every file is read by two trained readers. There is no Early Action, no Early Decision, and no binding round. One deadline, one shot.

What this school values

Academic rigor in the A-G sequence. UCLA's 13-factor review rates rigor of secondary school record and GPA as its most important academic signals. Readers look at what courses were available at your school and whether you took the hardest ones. Gaps where honors, AP, IB, or dual enrollment were offered and not taken are noted.

Achievement in context. UCLA's Freshman Selection document instructs readers to evaluate academic performance within the context of your school and circumstances. First-generation status, limited school resources, and family responsibilities are read as context, not deficit. What you did with what you had matters more than the absolute level of opportunity.

Essays as the character record. The UC system accepts no letters of recommendation. The four Personal Insight Questions carry all of the character, voice, and context weight that peer institutions distribute across essays and recommendations. UCLA rates application essays as very important, above extracurriculars and personal qualities as separate factors. At 145,000-plus applications, a generic PIQ is a structural liability.

Contribution to community. UCLA's review explicitly includes leadership, civic engagement, and service. The office trains readers to identify intellectual curiosity, tenacity, and commitment to community as the markers of students who will use the place well.

Access and affordability as enrollment goals. Families earning under $80,000 annually pay no tuition. UCLA has publicly increased scholarship targeting for low-income admits. First-generation and Pell-eligible applicants are a stated institutional priority, backed by annual admit data showing consistent increases in both groups.

This cycle (2026-27)

UCLA is test-blind. The UC system does not consider SAT or ACT scores in admissions, scholarship decisions, or course placement. This is not test-optional; scores submitted are not read. The policy is confirmed through at least the fall 2027 cycle, with a UC Academic Senate review due no later than June 2027. For the current cycle, PIQs and course rigor carry the weight that testing carries elsewhere.

Application volume is at a record high. UCLA received nearly 147,000 first-year applications for fall 2026. That scale shapes how readers work. Each PIQ must open with a clear scene or claim. Slow-building or generic responses are costly at this volume.

The ADT transfer pilot launched for fall 2026. Under state law AB1291, UCLA admitted its first cohort through a guaranteed-transfer pathway for California community college students completing an Associate Degree for Transfer in eight designated majors at ten partner colleges. This is a new structural pathway, not a one-cycle experiment.

Access priorities are sustained. For fall 2024, UCLA admitted 2,765 low-income California students and 2,766 first-generation students, both up from the prior cycle. Associate Vice Chancellor Gary Clark attributed the increases to outreach partnerships with underserved high schools and community colleges across California.

Deadlines

  • UC Filing Period Opens: October 1, 2026. The UC application is not the Common App. It is a separate system used across all nine UC undergraduate campuses.
  • Regular Decision Deadline: November 30, 2026. This is the only deadline. There is no Early Action, no Early Decision, and no binding round at UCLA or anywhere in the UC system.
  • Decisions: Late March 2027, consistent with prior cycles.

Essays

UCLA requires four Personal Insight Questions chosen from a menu of eight. Each answer is capped at 350 words. The UC application is shared across all UC campuses; there is no UCLA-specific supplement and no Why UCLA prompt.

The eight prompts are:

  • Describe a leadership experience in which you positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
  • Describe how you express your creative side, whether through problem-solving, innovative thinking, or artistic work.
  • What is your greatest talent or skill, and how have you developed and demonstrated it over time?
  • Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier.
  • Describe the most significant challenge you have faced, the steps you took to overcome it, and how it affected your academic achievement.
  • Think about an academic subject that inspires you and describe how you have furthered that interest inside or outside the classroom.
  • What have you done to make your school or community a better place?
  • Beyond what has already been shared, what makes you a strong candidate for admission to the University of California?

Choose four prompts that together produce a multifaceted portrait. Repeating the same theme across multiple responses is a documented weakness. Associate Vice Chancellor Clark has said applicants should think less about what they believe readers want to hear and more about what they want to say. Because there are no recommendations and no school-specific supplements, these four responses are the only place character, context, and voice appear in the file.

Common misreads

Treating the overall rate as your odds. The 8.9% figure is a blend. Computer Science admitted 4.1% of applicants in fall 2024. Nursing admitted under 1%. Film and Television admitted 1.1%. Out-of-state applicants face a structurally compressed pool regardless of major. The number that applies to you is the one for your program and your residency status.

Submitting SAT or ACT scores. UCLA is test-blind, not test-optional. Scores are not read, not considered for scholarships, and not used for course placement. Submitting them does not help.

Writing generic PIQs. With no letters of recommendation and no school-specific supplement, the four PIQs carry everything. A response that could have been written by any applicant at any school signals that the basic work was not done. Specific scenes, named impacts, and a clear voice are the baseline expectation, not a bonus.

Assuming a less competitive major is a back door into Engineering. UCLA does not admit Engineering Undeclared. You must name a specific major at application. Switching into Computer Science or Electrical Engineering after admission is restricted. The major you list is the pool you enter.

Applying out-of-state with a stats-only profile. The UC system's California-resident priority is permanent policy, not a one-cycle anomaly. An out-of-state applicant whose record is strong by national standards but carries no distinctive signal beyond grades and scores faces a pool where that profile is common.

Notable programs

All program admit rates below are fall 2024 vintage and should be read as relative selectivity, not current rates.

School of Nursing: approximately 0.9% (about 50 seats, 5,790 applicants). The most selective undergraduate program at UCLA. Direct admit; very small cohort.

School of Theater, Film and Television: Film and Television 1.1%, Theater 7.6%. Portfolio and supplemental application required. Film and Television is among the most selective programs at any U.S. university.

Samueli School of Engineering: blended rate approximately 6-7%. Direct admission by specific major; no undeclared option. Computer Science and Computer Science and Engineering each admitted 4.1%. Aerospace Engineering 3.3%, Mechanical Engineering 3.8%, Computer Engineering 4.7%. Chemical Engineering 14%, Materials Science 13% were the most accessible within the school.

School of the Arts and Architecture: approximately 7.5% blended. Design Media Arts 3.2%, Art 4.4%, Dance 13%, World Arts and Cultures 31%. Portfolio required for most programs.

The College (Humanities, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences) enrolls roughly 75% of undergraduates. Blended rate approximately 10.5%. Major is not considered for College admissions decisions. Division rates: Humanities 9.5%, Social Sciences 9.3%, Life Sciences 11%, Physical Sciences 15%.

Herb Alpert School of Music: approximately 20% blended, but Composition admitted 4.6%. Audition required. Rates vary widely by concentration.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
