NYU admits students to specific schools and colleges, not to the university as a whole. The school you choose on the Common App determines which committee reads your file and what they expect to see. Internal transfers between schools after admission are restricted, and Tisch requires a separate audition or portfolio review that cannot be bypassed by transferring in later.

The overall admit rate for the Class of 2029 was 7.7%, down from 31% a decade ago. That number blends very different pools. Three schools admitted fewer than 5% of applicants for the Class of 2029: the College of Arts and Science, Stern School of Business, and the Rory Meyers College of Nursing. Tandon School of Engineering in Brooklyn has historically admitted at a substantially higher rate. Choosing your school is the first and most consequential decision in this application.

NYU's financial profile changed materially in 2024-25. The NYU Promise eliminates tuition for first-year students from families earning under $100,000 with typical assets, and the university commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated need for all first-year admits to the New York campus who apply for aid on time.

What this school values

Fit with your chosen school. Each school has its own academic culture. Stern expects a quantitative record and sustained engagement with business or finance. Tandon expects calculus, physics, and domain-specific engineering interest. Tisch evaluates creative work through a portfolio or audition, not through grades alone. CAS reads for breadth and major-specific clarity. Gallatin requires a coherent rationale for designing your own program. A record that points clearly to one school, submitted to a different one, reads as a mismatch to that committee.

A specific reason for NYU, not just New York City. The admissions office has stated directly that it already knows why NYU is a great place to spend four years. The 250-word supplement is not the place to describe the city. Readers expect engagement with the specific school, its programs, and NYU's global network of campuses and study-away sites.

Bridge-building capacity. For 2026-27, the supplement asks for evidence that you can connect people across difference, foster collaboration, and work in a globally interconnected community. The office has said it values vulnerability and demonstrated growth over triumph narratives. A single focused moment outperforms a thematic survey at 250 words.

Access and global orientation. NYU's three-campus structure, New York, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai, is central to its institutional identity. Essays and activities that show comfort with cross-cultural engagement, ambiguity, and perspectives different from your own align with what the office describes as its community.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional and flexible. NYU has extended its test-optional policy through the 2026-27 cycle. Applicants may submit SAT or ACT scores, but may also substitute three AP exam scores, an IB diploma, three IB Higher Level exam scores, or other approved international credentials. The office states that not submitting scores does not disadvantage applicants. In a pool where GPA and scores are compressed at the top, essays and activities carry the full character picture for applicants who do not submit.

Early Decision carries a large statistical advantage. The Class of 2029 ED admit rate was approximately 30%, against 7.7% overall. More than half the class was admitted through ED. NYU offers both ED I and ED II, both binding. ED II provides a second binding window for students who need more time to assess finances. If admitted to a different NYU campus than preferred under ED II, students may be released from the binding agreement.

The supplement is optional but the office says skipping it is a disadvantage. In a pool of more than 120,000 applications, the 250-word supplement is the primary differentiator for applicants whose academic records are similar to thousands of others. The office's own blog states that not completing it puts applicants at a significant disadvantage.

Demonstrated interest is considered. NYU is unusual among highly selective universities in explicitly factoring demonstrated interest. Campus visits, admissions office contact, and college fair attendance are noted. Most peer institutions at this selectivity level do not consider demonstrated interest at all.

Deadlines

  • Early Decision I: November 1, 2026. Binding. Decisions released December 15.
  • Early Decision II: January 1, 2027. Binding. Decisions released February 15. Students admitted to a different NYU campus than their preferred campus may be released from the ED agreement.
  • Regular Decision: January 5, 2027. Non-binding. Decisions released April 1.

Essays

For 2026-27, NYU requires the Common App personal statement and offers one optional supplement of 250 words. The supplement is the same across all schools except Tisch, which adds a separate creative portfolio or audition review through SlideRoom.

The supplement prompt asks you to describe how your experiences have helped you understand what it takes to bridge divides so people can learn and work together. You may address one or more of three sub-questions: a time you encountered a different perspective and what you learned; an experience working with people who see things differently and the role you played; or someone you have observed who helps others think or work together and what you admire in them.

The office recommends focusing on one sub-question rather than attempting all three. At 250 words, a single scene-first narrative is more effective than a thematic survey. The office has said it values vulnerability and growth over victory-lap framing. The supplement should reveal something different from the personal statement, not repeat it.

The personal statement carries your identity, background, and intellectual trajectory. The supplement carries the specific bridge-building evidence the office has named as its 2026-27 priority. Using both pieces to say the same thing wastes limited space in a very large pool.

For Tisch applicants, the creative portfolio or audition is evaluated separately by faculty and often determines admission more than the academic record. Requirements differ by department: Film and Television, Drama, Dance, Music, Game Design, and Design each have distinct criteria listed on the Tisch admissions page.

Common misreads

Treating school choice as flexible. NYU admits to a specific school. Applying to Tandon because it is more accessible, when your record and essays point to CAS or Stern, produces a fit mismatch that the committee reads clearly. Post-admission transfers between schools are restricted, and Tisch cannot be entered later without the audition process.

Using the supplement to describe New York City. The admissions office has stated explicitly that it already knows why NYU is a great place. A supplement built around the city's energy, internship access, or cultural life without engaging the specific school or global network reads as the most common failure mode in NYU applications.

Skipping the supplement. The office's own blog says skipping the optional supplement puts applicants at a significant disadvantage in a pool of more than 120,000. Optional does not mean inconsequential here.

Applying to three schools at once in the supplement. Mentioning CAS, Stern, and Tisch programs in a single 250-word response signals that the school choice was not considered carefully. Each committee reads for fit with its own academic culture.

Assuming the overall admit rate is your rate. CAS, Stern, and Nursing each admitted fewer than 5% of applicants for the Class of 2029. Tandon has historically admitted at a rate well above the university average. The blended 7.7% describes no individual applicant's pool.

Notable programs

Three NYU schools admitted fewer than 5% of applicants for the Class of 2029: the College of Arts and Science, Stern School of Business, and Rory Meyers College of Nursing. All three figures carry a Class of 2029 vintage and should be read as directional, not as current cycle rates.

Tisch School of the Arts does not publish a single admit rate. Selectivity varies sharply by department. Drama admits roughly 25 to 30% of audition-passing applicants; Film and Television roughly 18 to 25%. Each department sets its own portfolio and audition standards. Test scores are not required for the Film and Television department specifically.

Tandon School of Engineering, located in Brooklyn, has historically been the most accessible NYU school by admit rate, with estimates in the 15 to 20% range. NYU does not publish a current per-school rate for Tandon.

Gallatin School of Individualized Study requires a separate statement explaining why you want to design your own program. The interdisciplinary concentration rationale is evaluated as a primary admissions criterion, not an afterthought.

Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development covers education, applied psychology, media, and music. Some Steinhardt programs require auditions or portfolios. Per-school admit rates are not published.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
