UGA's published overall admit rate is 37.7%. That number obscures a split that matters far more to most applicants. UGA's stated enrollment goal is 80% Georgia residents and 20% non-residents. In the most recently reported Early Action cycle, the in-state admit rate ran roughly 50% and the out-of-state rate ran roughly 25%, a gap of about 25 percentage points. Those figures are Class of 2029 EA vintage; treat them as directional, not current. The structural advantage for Georgia residents is built into the institution's enrollment plan and is not going away.

UGA also targets a first-year class of roughly 6,250 students. With about 51,600 total applications reported for the Class of 2030, the pool has grown substantially while class size has stayed stable. That math compresses odds for everyone, but out-of-state applicants absorb most of the pressure.

Georgia residents have a second structural advantage: the HOPE Scholarship covers full tuition at UGA for residents with a 3.0 or higher GPA. The Zell Miller Scholarship provides additional benefits for residents with a 3.7 or higher GPA and a 1200 or higher SAT. These scholarships create a high-yield in-state pipeline that reinforces the 80/20 enrollment goal.

What this school values

UGA's Faculty Admissions Committee has formally named six areas of holistic review. All six interact; no single factor determines admission.

Academic record, recalculated. UGA does not use the GPA on a student's transcript. It recalculates its own figure using actual grades in core academic courses across five subject areas. For the Class of 2026, roughly 93% of admitted students' core grades were A's. Trajectory matters: improving students can fare better than flat-but-high performers.

Rigor relative to what was available. UGA does not require a specific number of AP, IB, or dual-enrollment courses. Readers compare a student's course sequence against what their particular high school offered. Competitive applicants are described as taking the most or nearly the most challenging coursework their school provides. AP exam scores are not used in review; the course itself signals academic ambition.

Extracurricular depth over breadth. Readers look at depth of commitment and time invested, not the number of organizations. Sustained engagement in two or three areas reads better than a long, shallow list. Part-time work and family responsibilities count alongside conventional activities.

Writing and creativity. Evaluated through essays and through other creative outlets such as music, robotics, debate, and dance. A weaker essay is not automatically disqualifying if strong creative involvement elsewhere substantiates this dimension.

Personal character. The Faculty Admissions Committee values excellence in intellectual pursuits, community engagement, commitment to public service or leadership, and evidence of personal integrity and maturity.

Contribution to a community of scholar-citizens. UGA explicitly does not use major, gender, race, demonstrated interest, or legacy status in its review. Geography affects odds in practice through the enrollment goal, but the review criteria themselves are the same for every applicant.

Where holistic review applies most. Some applicants are admitted on academic strength alone in November and February. A large middle group receives full holistic file review over roughly three months. Essays and activities matter most for applicants in that middle range, not for those at the very top or bottom of the academic pool.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is required, with no optional pathway. UGA explicitly states there is no test-optional pathway. SAT or ACT scores are a mandatory, non-waivable component of every application, per University System of Georgia Board of Regents policy. The enrolled mid-50% SAT range is 1230 to 1410; ACT is 27 to 32.

No supplemental essay this cycle. The essay_prompts data for 2026-27 shows NO_SUPPLEMENT. UGA requires only the Common App personal statement this cycle, and the UGA-specific book supplement described in the Essays section below. See the flag below regarding a data gap on the supplement.

Georgia transcript integration is new for 2026-27. Starting with the cycle that opened in August 2026, Georgia high school graduates' transcripts flow directly from the Georgia Student Finance Commission into UGA's review system. Georgia applicants no longer self-report academic records. Out-of-state applicants still complete self-reporting.

Class size is stable; the pool is not. UGA's strategic enrollment plan targets roughly 1% annual campus growth, keeping first-year class size near 6,250 for five years. Application volume has grown more than 40% in recent cycles. Out-of-state applicants face the most compressed odds as a result.

First-generation students are a meaningful share of recent classes. First-generation students made up 21.6% of the Class of 2028. UGA does not publish a formal first-gen admissions boost, but the sustained representation across recent classes reflects an institutional access priority.

Essays

For 2026-27, the essay_prompts data shows NO_SUPPLEMENT, meaning UGA requires only the Common App personal statement this cycle. However, knowledge rows describe a UGA-specific book supplement that has been part of recent cycles. See the flag below; confirm the current requirement directly with UGA before submitting.

Based on prior-cycle guidance that describes how UGA reads essays, the following applies to the personal statement and any supplement that may be required.

The book supplement, if required, is a reflection exercise. The prompt asks applicants to identify a book read during the middle-to-high-school transition and explain its personal impact. UGA readers want self-reflection and introspective voice, not plot summary. The word count is tight (200-350 words), so a singular, focused insight matters more than breadth. The prompt is explicitly framed around the middle-to-high-school transition as a mirror for the high-school-to-college transition. Successful essays draw a through-line from the book's lesson during that earlier period to who the applicant is today. Essays that treat the memory as nostalgic without connecting it to current values or goals miss the thematic intent.

Unusual book choices with honest reflection tend to differentiate. Applicants choosing well-known books face the additional burden of rising above generic responses. UGA's FAQ states the goal is to learn about the student in their own voice. AI tools may be used like any general writing aid, but the final essay must be the student's own expression.

Brevity with substance is rewarded. With limited word counts, readers are alert to filler phrasing. An essay that reaches its insight early and holds it reads better than one that circles to fill space.

Terry College of Business and the Honors Program. Terry direct admit and the Honors Program involve additional consideration beyond the standard application. Terry readers expect demonstrated quantitative coursework. Honors applicants typically present a GPA above 4.0 (UGA-recalculated) and strong test scores; the Honors Program has its own separate application materials.

Common misreads

Using the overall admit rate as your odds. The 37.7% blended rate does not apply equally. Out-of-state applicants face a pool where the effective rate has run roughly 25% in recent EA cycles. Georgia residents face roughly 50%. Know which pool you are in.

Assuming Terry follows general UGA admit standards. Terry College of Business is a direct admit program and is materially more competitive than UGA overall. Applicants without AP Calculus, AP Statistics, or sustained business engagement are denied Terry even when general UGA admission is granted. Business interest without quantitative coursework is the most common Terry rejection pattern.

Treating UGA as an easy out-of-state target. Application volume has grown past 51,600 for roughly 6,250 seats. The 80% in-state enrollment goal means out-of-state applicants compete for a structurally constrained share of the class. UGA is not a safety for most competitive out-of-state applicants.

Listing activities rather than demonstrating depth. UGA readers explicitly look for depth of commitment and time invested, not the number of organizations. A long list of clubs with minimal time in each reads as breadth without substance.

Generic SEC flagship framing in essays. UGA readers want specific engagement with Terry, the Honors Program, or Athens college-town life. Out-of-state applicants who signal genuine fit beyond rankings and football differentiate themselves. Vague praise for UGA as a large research university does not.

Submitting without test scores. There is no test-optional pathway at UGA. An application without SAT or ACT scores is incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Notable programs

Terry College of Business is UGA's most selective undergraduate entry point. It admits directly at the time of general UGA admission and requires demonstrated quantitative coursework, typically AP Calculus and AP Statistics with strong grades, alongside sustained business engagement such as DECA, FBLA, or internships. No per-program admit rate is published; the knowledge rows describe Terry as materially more competitive than UGA's overall 37.7%. The Terry figure is 2024 cycle vintage.

The UGA Honors Program operates separate selection above general UGA admission. Top-quartile applicants with a UGA-recalculated GPA above 4.0 and strong test scores (1370 or higher SAT or 31 or higher ACT at the Honors median) pursue Honors for additional research, faculty, and residential resources. Honors requires its own separate application materials and submission by the EA deadline of October 15.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
