Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
The University of South Carolina's published admit rate is about 64%. That number covers a large and increasingly competitive pool: USC received more than 69,000 applications for fall 2026, up 64% over five years, and enrolled roughly 7,800 new first-years. Out-of-state applications have grown faster than in-state applications in recent cycles, which matters because South Carolina residents benefit from substantially higher admit rates, a top-10-percent class-rank guarantee, and state scholarship programs that can cover full tuition.
The second structural fact is that USC is not one undifferentiated admit. The South Carolina Honors College, Capstone Scholars, and Top Scholars residential programs are gated to applicants who apply by October 15. The Darla Moore School of Business International Business program, ranked number one nationally by U.S. News for over a decade, requires a documented language background and international engagement for direct admission. Applying to USC without understanding these gates means competing for a different outcome than you may have intended.
Academic record in context. USC's admissions office reviews rigor of coursework alongside GPA and considers each applicant's background and circumstances. The office states explicitly that it pays close attention to personal narrative alongside academic performance. Neither scores nor GPA alone determine outcomes.
Personal narrative over topic. USC's own guidance instructs applicants to choose the essay topic they are most excited to write about, focus on personal experience, and make the essay reveal something about who they are rather than what they have done. Essays that choose an impressive-sounding topic but keep the writer invisible are misaligned with what the office says it values.
Contribution to community, tradition, and spirit. USC's what-we-look-for language names community fit as an explicit review criterion. Essays that engage with USC's specific identity, its Honors College tradition, its scale as the state flagship, or its distinctive programs read differently than essays written to a generic large-public audience.
Major-level fit. Major choice is part of the review, and some programs are capacity-constrained. A credible connection between your record and your stated major matters. Applicants who are undecided can select Undeclared in the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences without penalty, but claiming deep passion for a major without supporting evidence creates a credibility gap.
Recommendation letters as character evidence. USC names recommendation letters as a source of evidence about values and personal characteristics, not just academic ability.
Testing is optional through fall 2027. USC has confirmed that SAT and ACT scores are not required for freshman admission through spring, summer, or fall 2027, covering general admission, Honors College consideration, and merit scholarship evaluation. Applicants who choose to submit scores will have both SAT and ACT superscored. The policy is explicitly capped at fall 2027 with no stated commitment beyond it.
Application volume is at record levels. More than 69,000 applications arrived for fall 2026, up 64% over five years. Out-of-state applications have grown faster than in-state. A larger and more geographically diverse pool raises the bar, especially for out-of-state applicants competing for limited seats.
The top-10-percent in-state guarantee continues. South Carolina residents who rank in the top 10% of their high school graduating class are guaranteed admission. The policy requires no test scores or additional materials beyond the standard application and was designed explicitly to expand access across rural and underserved counties.
Merit aid reaches about 15% of the entering class. The large majority of admitted students do not receive merit awards. Those who do are identified through competitive scholarship processes tied to the Honors College and Top Scholar programs, which require separate application materials and, for Top Scholars, a virtual interview and in-person finalist weekend.
USC's specific 2026-27 essay prompts have not yet been published. The application includes the Common App personal statement, a USC-specific academic short answer, and separate additional essays for the South Carolina Honors College.
Based on USC's published guidance, the personal statement should center on a personal experience and make the applicant visible as a person. The office instructs applicants directly: focus less on the topic and more on what it reveals about you. A safe or impressive-sounding topic that keeps the writer at a distance is misaligned with what the office says it values.
The USC-specific academic short answer functions similarly to a why-us supplement. Readers use it alongside the essay and activities list to assess how the applicant would contribute to campus community. Naming specific programs, opportunities, or resources at USC reads better than generic institutional praise. Confusing USC Columbia with the University of Southern California is a documented negative signal.
The South Carolina Honors College requires two additional essays. One asks what sparks intellectual curiosity and how the applicant has explored it. Honors reviewers are explicitly evaluating critical thinking in action, not just a list of past accomplishments. Leadership potential, service, and specific interest in USC are also weighted.
For Moore School of Business International Business direct admission, the application must reflect a documented language background and international engagement. Interest in international business without that record does not satisfy the program's direct-admit criteria.
Treating the October 15 deadline as optional. The South Carolina Honors College, Capstone Scholars, and Top Scholars programs are gated to applicants who apply by October 15. Strong applicants who submit after that date cannot access these programs even when general admission is granted.
Assuming Moore International Business follows the general admit rate. Direct admission to Moore IB requires a documented language record and sustained international engagement. Applicants who target Moore IB without these credentials may receive general USC admission but will not receive IB direct admit. The program's number-one national ranking reflects selectivity well above the university's overall 64%.
Writing to a generic large-public audience. USC's review explicitly values community, tradition, and spirit. Essays that could have been written for any flagship university, or that confuse USC Columbia with USC Los Angeles, signal that the applicant has not engaged with what makes this institution specific.
Claiming major passion without supporting evidence. Major choice is part of the review. An essay that claims deep interest in a field with no corresponding coursework, activities, or experiences in the application creates a credibility gap that readers notice.
Assuming merit aid is broadly available. Only about 15% of the entering class receives merit-based scholarships from USC. Competitive awards are tied to the Honors College and Top Scholar processes, which require separate materials and, for Top Scholars, an interview. Admission alone does not carry a scholarship.
The Darla Moore School of Business International Business undergraduate program has been ranked number one nationally by U.S. News continuously for over a decade. It is USC's most distinctive specialty admit and drives substantial out-of-state application interest. Direct admission requires a documented language background, typically four or more years of high school world language with strong proficiency or an AP language course, and sustained international engagement such as DECA, FBLA, internships, or study abroad. A general interest in international business without that record does not qualify for direct admit. No per-program admit rate is published; selectivity is materially higher than USC's overall 64%.
The South Carolina Honors College received a record 7,000 applications for fall 2025, an 18% increase over the prior cycle. Demand at that level makes the Honors pool more competitive than the headline admit rate suggests. The College of Information and Communications has set an explicit enrollment growth target of 3% annually and is actively expanding first-generation outreach, making it one of USC's more accessible colleges for strong applicants with a genuine interest in media, journalism, or communications.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
