Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Pomona College admits about 7% of applicants into a single undergraduate program of roughly 1,700 students. There are no separate colleges or majors to choose at application. Every applicant competes in the same pool, reviewed by committee using a multi-factor process that Director of Admissions Adam Sapp has described explicitly: Pomona values "probing thinkers, creative learners and committed community-builders."
The most important structural fact about Pomona is the Claremont Colleges Consortium. Pomona sits alongside Claremont McKenna, Scripps, Pitzer, and Harvey Mudd on adjacent campuses in Claremont, California. Students cross-register freely across all five schools, sharing libraries, dining, athletics, and a combined community of roughly 7,000 undergraduates. This is not a footnote. It is Pomona's defining feature, and the supplement is partly a test of whether applicants understand it.
Pomona is need-blind for domestic applicants, including DACA and undocumented students, and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need without loans. For the Class of 2030, 29% of admitted students would be the first in their family to attend college, a record the college president highlighted as a deliberate outcome of its access strategy.
Intellectual curiosity with depth. Pomona reads for sustained exploration, not credential accumulation. Recommendations that describe how a student thinks and engages peers carry weight. Activities that reflect genuine inquiry outside required coursework read stronger than a title-heavy list.
Community contribution. Sapp's framing is explicit: admitted students are committed community-builders. A profile strong on academics and achievement but thin on collaborative or community-oriented engagement misses a named criterion. Pomona is a small residential campus; how an applicant will contribute to daily life there is a real question in committee.
5C Consortium fit. Applicants who can articulate a specific academic path using Pomona's curriculum alongside cross-registration at CMC, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, or Scripps read as having understood what Pomona offers. Generic praise for small classes does not.
Access and context. First-generation status, limited school resources, and economic context are read as context, not deficit. Pomona partners with QuestBridge, the Posse Foundation, and runs its own Pomona Academy for Youth Success pipeline for LA-area students. The absence of expensive enrichment does not hurt an application read in context.
Voice over polish. The supplement includes short-answer prompts that function as voice diagnostics. Sapp's office has signaled that over-polished or AI-flattened responses read as generic. Particular and slightly rough reads as authentic.
Testing remains optional. Pomona's test-optional policy continues for 2026-27 entry. Among admitted students in recent cycles, approximately 65% submitted scores. Applicants whose scores fall below the mid-50% range of enrolled students (SAT 1450 to 1550) often choose not to submit, and the policy is designed to support that choice.
Access priorities are intensifying. In April 2026, President Gabrielle Starr announced that endowment tax savings are being reinvested to expand the Middle Income Initiative, broadening aid access for students across the economic spectrum. The record 29% first-generation admit rate in the Class of 2030 reflects a deliberate class-composition priority, not a one-cycle anomaly.
ED carries a real advantage. Pomona's most recently reported ED admit rate is approximately 13%, against 7% overall. Both ED I and ED II are binding. The ED II deadline is the same date as Regular Decision, so the binding commitment is the only meaningful difference between those two rounds for late applicants.
Pomona requires the Common App personal statement and a supplement with four prompts. The first is required; applicants choose among the remaining three.
The 150-word major prompt is short enough that vagueness is immediately visible. Name a specific intellectual question, not a career outcome. The optional prompts are voice diagnostics as much as content questions. Consistency of register across all four answers matters; committee review means multiple readers see the full file.
A separate Why Pomona essay is not listed in the current prompts, but the community and major prompts together function as a fit test. Naming specific 5C courses, Pomona faculty, or consortium resources the applicant would use is the baseline for demonstrating real research, not a bonus.
Treating Pomona as interchangeable with Williams or Amherst. Pomona's 5C Consortium is structurally unlike any East Coast LAC. An essay that praises small classes and close faculty relationships without engaging the consortium signals the applicant researched LACs generically, not Pomona specifically.
California as climate or lifestyle. Claremont is a small suburb 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Essays that frame California as good weather, beaches, or proximity to outdoor recreation without cultural or intellectual specificity read as superficial. Pomona readers calibrate for engagement with California's actual context: regional culture, environmental questions, the LA arts and professional ecosystem, or specific community engagement.
Pre-professional optimization without breadth. Pomona attracts pre-health and pre-law applicants, but a transcript and activity list that read as pure credential-stacking for graduate school, without intellectual breadth or community engagement, signals a mismatch with LAC scale. Pomona's curriculum requires breadth across six areas of inquiry and delays major declaration until the end of sophomore year for a reason.
Mentioning the 5C as a safety net. Language that frames cross-registration as backup options, or implies Pomona alone would not be sufficient, reads as the wrong reason to choose the school. The consortium is a chosen feature of the Pomona path, not a hedge.
Stats without community signal. A strong academic record with no evidence of collaborative engagement, peer contribution, or community-building misses a criterion Pomona names explicitly. The residential scale of 1,700 undergraduates makes this a practical question, not an abstract one.
Pomona admits into a single undergraduate program. There are no separate colleges, schools, or majors to select at application. Major declaration happens at the end of sophomore year, reflecting the curriculum's commitment to exploration across six areas of inquiry.
The 5C Consortium expands the effective course catalog substantially. Harvey Mudd offers engineering and computer science at research depth. CMC is the primary resource for economics and government. Pitzer emphasizes social justice and activism-oriented programs. Scripps offers a women's college curriculum and strong arts programs. Pomona students can take courses at any of the four other schools without additional cost or application.
Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens compete in NCAA Division III in the SCIAC. Twenty-one varsity teams are shared between the two campuses. Recruited athletes go through a parallel pathway with coach support and academic threshold review.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
Every college values different qualities. See how your profile aligns, then go as deep as you want.
