ED, ED II, RD

Claremont McKenna is a small liberal arts college in Claremont, California, with a specific institutional identity: government, economics, public affairs, finance, and international relations. Roughly 60% of students major in government, economics, or public policy. That concentration is not incidental. It shapes the faculty, the programming, the research institutes, and what the admissions office reads for.

The overall admit rate is 10.3%. Early Decision I has historically admitted at roughly 22%. Those two numbers describe different pools. ED I applicants signal a binding first-choice commitment; RD applicants face a compressed pool after early rounds fill a substantial share of the class.

CMC is also one of five Claremont Colleges sharing a single square mile. Cross-registration across the consortium is free and common. A CMC student takes classes at Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Scripps, or Pitzer without extra cost. That structure matters: CMC's narrow curricular focus is the point, and the consortium delivers the breadth around it.

What this school values

Applied and policy-oriented intellectual identity. CMC's mission statement names business, government, and the professions explicitly. Readers calibrate for applicants whose interests connect to applied questions, not just ideas in the abstract. A record centered on policy research, economics, debate, government internships, or finance reads as on-mission. A pure-humanities or pure-theory profile without any applied or policy angle reads as a fit mismatch.

Leadership with real outcomes. CMC's fundraising campaign was titled "Responsible Leadership." The admissions office reads for founded organizations, sustained initiative, and evidence of moving others toward a goal. Participation without leadership signal is a gap.

Comfort with intellectual disagreement. CMC's Open Academy initiative is an institutional commitment to viewpoint diversity and constructive dialogue. The second required essay asks directly about a time you changed your mind or changed someone else's. Applicants whose record shows only one-sided position-taking, with no evidence of engaging opposing arguments, read as misaligned with this stated value.

Specific engagement with CMC's structure. The Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum hosts more than 80 dinner-lecture events per year, four nights a week during term. The Robert Day Scholars Program admits roughly 50 students per year into an advanced finance and economics track. The Keck Center anchors international and strategic studies. The Rose and Lowe Institutes support applied policy research. Readers notice when applicants name these programs with specificity and when they do not.

Access and need. CMC is need-blind for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and meets 100% of demonstrated need. The average first-year need-based package is approximately $67,764, with grants covering most of it and minimal loans. First-generation status is read as context.

This cycle (2026-27)

Test-optional through this cycle. CMC has explicitly extended its test-optional policy through Fall 2027 entry, which covers this admissions cycle. Submitting SAT or ACT scores is a choice, not a requirement. CMC has announced that the test requirement returns for Fall 2028 entry, so this is the last cycle under the optional framework. Applicants who submit scores have them considered alongside the rest of the file; applicants who do not are reviewed on the full application without penalty.

Two binding early rounds and RD. ED I closes November 1, 2026. ED II and RD both close January 10, 2027. The ED I admit rate of roughly 22% against 10.3% overall reflects both the binding commitment and the earlier, more self-selected pool. ED II provides a second binding option for applicants who need more time.

Merit scholarship priority deadline. Applicants seeking merit scholarship consideration should have their application submitted by December 1, within the ED I framework. This is a separate internal deadline, not a separate round.

Deadlines

  • Early Decision I: November 1, 2026. Binding. Decision by December 15. CSS Profile and FAFSA due November 8. Merit scholarship priority: application submitted by December 1.
  • Early Decision II: January 10, 2027. Binding. Decision by February 15. CSS Profile and FAFSA due January 17.
  • Regular Decision: January 10, 2027. Non-binding. Decision by April 1.

Essays

CMC requires two supplemental essays in addition to the Common App personal statement.

Essay 1: Why CMC. The prompt asks applicants to explain why they want to attend CMC in light of its mission to prepare students for responsible leadership in business, government, and the professions. There is no published word limit in the data, but the prompt is specific about the mission framing. Generic praise for small class sizes or California weather does not answer it. Strong responses name specific programs, institutes, or Athenaeum speakers with a reason, and connect them to a concrete intellectual or professional direction the applicant is already pursuing.

Essay 2: Open Academy. The prompt asks for a specific episode in which engaging with someone holding a different viewpoint resulted in a change, either in the applicant or in the other person. It asks what the change was, what caused it, and what the applicant learned. This is not an invitation to describe a debate win. It is a test of whether the applicant can describe genuine intellectual movement. Vague or hypothetical answers underperform. A specific conversation, a named disagreement, and a clear account of what shifted are the baseline.

The Athenaeum is the most commonly mentioned CMC feature in Why CMC essays and the most commonly mishandled. Naming it without engaging its format, which is a small-group dinner followed by a lecture and extended Q&A, not a standard auditorium talk, signals surface-level research. The Athenaeum calendar is public. Applicants who name specific speakers and explain what questions they would bring to the dinner table read as having understood the program.

Common misreads

Treating CMC as a generic liberal arts college. CMC is not a smaller Pomona. Its curricular concentration in government, economics, and public policy is the institution's defining feature. An essay that could be submitted to Williams, Amherst, or Pomona without revision signals the applicant did not engage with what CMC is.

Pure-theory or pure-humanities framing. Applicants whose intellectual identity is entirely theoretical or literary, with no connection to applied questions, policy problems, or leadership outcomes, often misread CMC as a generalist LAC. The admissions office reads for applied and policy orientation specifically.

Mentioning the Athenaeum without engaging its format. The Athenaeum hosts dinner-lectures, not standard talks. The small-group dinner and extended Q&A are the point. Applicants who write "I look forward to attending lectures" without engaging the format or naming specific speakers read as having copied a talking point rather than researched the program.

Position-taking without cross-perspective engagement. The Open Academy essay prompt is explicit. Applicants whose record shows sustained one-sided advocacy with no evidence of engaging opposing arguments are misaligned with a stated institutional value, and the second essay makes that visible directly.

Applying ED to CMC without understanding the binding commitment. ED I and ED II are both binding. Applicants who need to compare financial aid offers should apply RD or, if the data on REA noted in the knowledge rows is accurate for this cycle, clarify the round structure before submitting. The knowledge rows reference a Restrictive Early Action option, but the deadlines data lists only ED I, ED II, and RD. Applicants should confirm the current round structure on CMC's official admissions page before applying.

Notable programs

CMC does not publish per-program admit rates. The overall rate is 10.3% for the 2026 cycle. Government is the largest department. Economics and public policy are the next most common concentrations. Together these account for the majority of the student body.

The Robert Day Scholars Program admits approximately 50 students per year through a separate selection process within the admissions cycle. It combines advanced finance and economics coursework with leadership development and a full scholarship. Applicants interested in RDS should signal that interest explicitly in the Why CMC essay with specific reasoning, not just a name-drop.

The Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies anchors the international relations and foreign affairs track. The Rose Institute of State and Local Government and the Lowe Institute of Political Economy support undergraduate applied-policy research with named faculty mentors. CMC operates 11 graduate-level research institutes and centers in total.

CMC competes in NCAA Division III as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags and Athenas across 21 varsity sports in the SCIAC conference. Recruited athletes go through a parallel pathway with academic thresholds; coach contact and pre-read clearance are part of that process.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
