Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Marquette University admits about 81% of applicants. That number is real, but it is not a guarantee. Marquette is a Jesuit Catholic university in Milwaukee with a holistic review that explicitly weighs leadership, service, and character alongside academic record. An application that treats the 81% as automatic will read differently to a committee than one that engages with why Marquette specifically.
Marquette is a direct-admission institution. Applicants choose one of seven academic colleges at the time of application, not the university in general. The committee reviewing your file is reading for fit with that college and its academic culture. The overall admit rate does not vary publicly by college, but the commitment to a specific program is real from day one.
The Class of 2030 enrolled about 2,100 first-year students from 43 states and territories and 14 countries. First-generation students make up more than 23% of recent incoming classes. Geographic diversity beyond Wisconsin and Illinois is an active institutional priority under the Marquette 2031 strategic plan.
Academic achievement and rigor. Marquette's Common Data Set rates rigor of secondary record and academic GPA as very important. The enrolled mid-50% SAT range is 1220 to 1350 and ACT range is 26 to 31. Only 3% of enrolled students had a GPA below 3.0. Academic floors exist even at an 81% admit rate.
Leadership expressed in service. Marquette's published mission names leadership and service activities as explicit review components, not supplementary signals. The Jesuit concept of cura personalis, care for the whole person, shapes how the office reads extracurricular lists and recommendations. Sustained community engagement, advocacy work, or volunteer leadership carries real weight. A transcript-only profile with no service orientation misses a named criterion.
Fit with the specific college and program. Direct admission means the committee is evaluating whether your academic background and stated interests are a credible match for the college you selected. Pre-health applicants are expected to show science course rigor and clinical or volunteer healthcare exposure. Business applicants benefit from quantitative coursework and relevant experience. The personal statement is the primary place to make that case.
Character and personal qualities. Marquette's CDS rates character and personal qualities as important. Recommendations that reinforce community contribution and character read more strongly than those that only list achievements. The office has stated it reads each application attentively, including the extracurricular list, because it recognizes the effort students invest.
Access and first-generation background. VP for Enrollment Brian Troyer's research focuses on disparities in college access, and Marquette has expanded fly-in programs and support for underrepresented students. First-generation status is read as context and as a signal of alignment with the institution's mission, not as a deficit.
Testing is optional, with full scholarship parity. Marquette's test-optional policy explicitly states that students who do not submit scores will not be penalized. Critically, all applicants regardless of score submission receive equal consideration for the Pere Marquette Award, Marquette's flagship merit scholarship. This is a stronger commitment than most test-optional schools, which often tie merit aid to submitted scores. Applicants who submit scores are evaluated in the 1220 to 1350 SAT and 26 to 31 ACT mid-50% ranges.
No supplemental essay for most applicants. For 2026-27, Marquette requires only the Common App personal statement for the general applicant population. Specialized health professions programs, including the Doctor of Physical Therapy direct-admit program, require profession-specific essays. For everyone else, the personal statement is the sole extended piece of writing in the file.
Early Action is the structurally advantaged pathway. EA is non-binding and closes November 15, 2026, with decisions by late December. Marquette explicitly directs students interested in the University Honors Program to apply by the EA deadline. EA also provides earlier housing access and merit scholarship consideration. There is no binding Early Decision option.
Class size is stable. Marquette enrolled roughly 2,100 first-year students in the Class of 2030. No dramatic tightening of selectivity is expected for fall 2027. Geographic diversity beyond the traditional Wisconsin and Illinois base is an active priority, with deposits from outside those states up 13% in the most recent cycle.
The DPT direct-admit program is highly selective within Marquette. The Doctor of Physical Therapy direct-admit track admits approximately 80 students from roughly 1,200 high school applicants. That is a rate well below the university overall and requires a strong science transcript and documented clinical or healthcare volunteer exposure.
For 2026-27, Marquette requires only the Common App personal statement for most applicants. There is no general supplemental essay. That concentrates the committee's attention on a single extended document as the primary window into a student's voice, values, and fit.
Because Marquette is a direct-admission institution, the personal statement is read in the context of the college you selected. Readers are evaluating whether your interests, background, and goals are a credible match for that specific college. A statement that could be submitted to any university without revision misses this context.
Marquette's institutional mission is grounded in excellence, faith, leadership, and service. Applicants who can articulate a genuine sense of community responsibility or service orientation in their essays align with how the office describes the students it seeks to form. This does not require expressing religious faith; Marquette enrolls students of all backgrounds. It does require engaging with why this campus and culture, not just any private university.
Some applications are reviewed by multiple committee members. Essays should be clear and accessible to a range of readers. Highly experimental formats carry more risk at a committee-oriented institution than at a school where a single reader decides.
Health professions programs with separate essays. The DPT direct-admit program and a small number of other specialized tracks require a profession-specific essay. These prompts ask why you are interested in the profession and what experiences shaped that interest. Concrete experience, through shadowing, volunteering, or direct patient contact, reads far more strongly than generalized admiration for the field. Readers in these programs are evaluating whether you have engaged directly with the work, not just the idea of it.
Treating 81% as near-automatic. Marquette still applies academic floors and reads holistically for fit. Applicants with a GPA below 3.0 and no distinguishing context face real denial risk. The broad admit rate reflects a large and varied pool, not an absence of standards.
Ignoring the Jesuit identity. A personal statement that frames Marquette as a generic private university near a city, with no engagement with the cura personalis ethos, the Milwaukee setting, or named programs, leaves the committee without a clear reason to admit a borderline applicant. Mission alignment functions as a tiebreaker in a large pool.
Generic service framing. Listing volunteer hours without reflection does not satisfy the leadership-in-service criterion Marquette names explicitly. The office is reading for evidence that service is a genuine orientation, not a resume line.
Applying to DPT without science rigor or clinical exposure. The DPT direct-admit program admits roughly 80 students from 1,200 applicants. A strong overall GPA without biology, chemistry, or anatomy coursework, and without documented healthcare contact hours, is a significant mismatch for that pool.
Waiting for Regular Decision if Honors is the goal. The University Honors Program requires EA application by November 15. Students who apply RD are not eligible for Honors consideration in the first-year cycle.
Submitting a personal statement that reads as interchangeable with other Jesuit schools. Marquette readers respond poorly to essays that could be sent to Boston College, Georgetown, or Loyola Maryland without revision. The Milwaukee urban setting, specific programs like Applied Investment Management or the journalism initiatives, and the cura personalis framing are the expected points of engagement.
Marquette's seven undergraduate colleges are the College of Arts and Sciences, the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, the Opus College of Engineering, the College of Business Administration, the Diederich College of Communication, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences, and the College of Nursing. Applicants apply directly to one college.
The Doctor of Physical Therapy direct-admit program is the most selective entry point at Marquette, admitting approximately 80 students from roughly 1,200 high school applicants. A strong science transcript and documented clinical or healthcare volunteer exposure are baseline expectations for that pool.
The College of Nursing's BSN program is a significant draw and is reviewed with attention to science preparation and healthcare exposure. The College of Business Administration anchors pre-professional pipelines in business and finance, including the Applied Investment Management program. The Diederich College of Communication houses journalism and corporate communications programs with strong pre-career pipelines.
The University Honors Program is open to incoming first-year students across colleges and involves small seminars, faculty mentorship, and research and service-learning engagement. Honors-interested applicants must apply by the Early Action deadline of November 15.
Marquette does not publish per-college admit rates. The 81% overall rate is the only publicly available figure.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
