Loyola Marymount University admitted 45.1% of applicants for the Class of 2028. That number is a blend. LMU is a private university with no in-state or out-of-state split, but the rate varies meaningfully by program. The School of Film and Television, which requires a portfolio for Production and Animation tracks, admits an estimated 19% of its applicants, well below the university-wide figure.

LMU sits on a bluff in West Los Angeles, adjacent to the entertainment industry, financial sector, and nonprofit infrastructure that define the city. That location is not incidental to admissions. The school's seven colleges and schools draw applicants who can name specific LA-industry pipelines, and readers notice when they cannot.

The university's Jesuit and Marymount identity shapes review in a concrete way. LMU's admissions FAQ states that test scores have never been the most significant factor in its decisions, a position the office held before test-optional policies became common. Only 26% of the enrolled Class of 2028 submitted test scores. Character, service, and community contribution are named review criteria alongside grades.

What this school values

Academic preparation, read in context. LMU's Common Data Set rates rigor of secondary record and GPA as important factors. The office reads the transcript against what was available at the applicant's school, not against an abstract standard. Mid-range academic profiles are not disqualifying when the fuller application is strong.

Whole-person engagement. LMU's apply page states explicitly that the review process is guided by the same philosophy as its education: considering the whole person. Character and personal qualities, volunteer work, and talent are rated as very important alongside academic rigor. An application that is only a transcript and test score misses most of what the office is reading for.

Service and community contribution grounded in action. LMU's Jesuit mission centers on social justice and ethical leadership. The office values service that is sustained and specific, not a list of memberships. Essays that lead with a concrete prior experience and connect it to a named LMU program or community resource read as more credible than those that lead with aspiration.

Fit with the specific college and LA context. LMU houses seven colleges. Readers expect applicants to know which one they are entering and why LMU's positioning in Los Angeles makes it the right place for their goals. Naming a specific studio, organization, research center, or career pipeline is the baseline, not a bonus.

Demonstrated interest. LMU's structure includes binding Early Decision at two points in the cycle. The office uses binding commitment as a yield signal. Campus visits and engagement with LMU outreach events are also noted.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional, with full access to all programs and scholarships. LMU's admissions FAQ confirms that applicants who do not submit scores are not disadvantaged and remain eligible for all majors, the Honors Program, and merit scholarship consideration. Scores submitted from testing agencies or appearing on transcripts will not be used if the applicant selects test-optional. This policy is institutionally established and reflects the office's stated philosophy, not a temporary accommodation.

The supplement is optional but carries real weight. LMU offers a single optional supplement asking why the applicant is interested in LMU and/or their chosen major. Because the review is explicitly framed around the whole person, submitting a strong supplement functions as a demonstrated-interest signal. Readers use it as the primary differentiator among academically similar profiles.

SFTV portfolio review is a separate gate. Production and Animation applicants must submit a portfolio through LMU's Application Status Page. Portfolio deadlines are November 1 for ED and EA applicants and January 15 for RD applicants. SFTV faculty review portfolios independently of the general holistic review. A strong overall LMU application does not compensate for an underdeveloped portfolio.

Access initiatives are expanding. LMU's 2021-26 strategic plan includes Transfer Admission Guarantee agreements with El Camino College and Santa Monica College and a new psychology scholars program. The university's newsroom reported projected increases in Pell-eligible enrollment, signaling active socioeconomic access emphasis in the current cycle.

Essays

LMU requires the Common App personal statement. The university also offers one optional supplement asking applicants to explain why they are interested in LMU and/or why they chose their major, up to 500 words. The specific 2026-27 prompt text was not available at publication; confirm the current wording on LMU's admissions site before applying.

The supplement is the clearest differentiator in the application for otherwise similar academic profiles. Readers expect two things in one essay: a concrete reason for the chosen major rooted in prior experience, and a specific connection to LMU resources, programs, or LA-industry context. An essay that addresses only one of those two questions leaves the other unanswered.

Generic Jesuit-mission praise does not differentiate. Every applicant can write that LMU values service. The essays that read as compelling name a specific course, faculty member, club, studio partnership, or career pipeline and explain why that particular resource matters to this particular applicant.

SFTV applicants in Production and Animation tracks submit a portfolio in addition to the written application. The portfolio is reviewed by faculty for sustained creative practice and original point of view, not technical skill alone. Work that demonstrates thematic depth and a consistent creative voice reads as more competitive than a technically proficient but generic sample reel.

Common misreads

Treating LMU as a USC backup. Applications from strong California students with no specific engagement with LMU's Jesuit mission, LA-industry framing, or program-level fit read as low-effort. LMU's holistic review is genuine. A 45% admit rate still means more than half of applicants are denied, and fit signals are part of what separates them.

Skipping the optional supplement. Optional does not mean irrelevant. The supplement is the primary mechanism for demonstrating fit. Submitting only the Common App personal statement leaves the office with no applicant-specific reason to choose LMU over its peers.

Writing about LA in the abstract. Phrases like "I want to be in a dynamic city" or "LA's creative energy" do not resonate. Readers expect a named company, studio, organization, or program that connects the applicant's goals to LMU's specific position in the city.

Assuming the SFTV portfolio is a formality. SFTV Production and Animation tracks require a portfolio reviewed by faculty. A strong overall application does not substitute for a portfolio that demonstrates creative point of view. This is a separate gate with an estimated admit rate around 19%, not the university-wide 45%.

Conflating LMU SFTV with USC Cinematic Arts. The two programs have different cultures, different selectivity levels, and different industry relationships. An essay written for one does not transfer to the other. Readers at LMU notice when the framing fits a different institution.

Notable programs

LMU's seven colleges include the School of Film and Television, the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering, the College of Business Administration, and the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. Admission is through a single LMU application; there is no separate college-level application process except for SFTV's portfolio requirement.

The School of Film and Television is LMU's most selective program. Hollywood Reporter ranked SFTV fifth among US film schools in 2025. CollegeVine and EducationScientists estimate the undergraduate SFTV admit rate at approximately 19%, against LMU's overall 45.1%. LMU does not publish a per-program rate; treat the 19% figure as an approximation from the 2024 cycle, not a confirmed current number.

The College of Business Administration draws applicants with LA-industry interests in entertainment finance, music business, real estate, and hospitality. It is not separately admitted. The Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts and the School of Education attract applicants with civic-engagement and social-impact framing consistent with LMU's Jesuit mission.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
