Villanova is an Augustinian Catholic university on Philadelphia's Main Line. It admits roughly one in four applicants overall, but that number obscures two structural facts that matter more.

First, Villanova has five colleges with meaningfully different admit rates. The Villanova School of Business runs around 11 to 13 percent. The College of Nursing runs around 13 to 16 percent. Engineering runs around 16 to 19 percent. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is somewhat less selective. Each college admits directly; transferring between colleges after enrollment is restricted. The college you choose is a real commitment, and the supplement you write should reflect it.

Second, Early Decision carries an unusually large advantage here. The ED1 admit rate for the Class of 2028 was approximately 54 percent against a roughly 25 percent overall rate. ED admits have historically filled about half the enrolled class. For a qualified applicant who is certain about Villanova, that gap is among the largest available at a school in this selectivity range.

What this school values

Villanova's Executive Director of Admissions has described the review process publicly using three terms drawn from the university seal: Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas. These map directly to what the office reads for.

Veritas: academic truth. Rigor of secondary school record and GPA are rated Very Important in Villanova's Common Data Set. For the Class of 2029, 87 percent of admitted students ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school class, with an unweighted GPA mid-50 percent range of 3.87 to 4.10. Rigor is the first filter.

Unitas: community and belonging. Villanova reads activities for sustained engagement, not breadth. Among admitted students in the Class of 2029, 83 percent participated in community service, 80 percent played sports, and 66 percent held paying jobs. The office is not counting activities; it is reading for genuine participation in something beyond yourself.

Caritas: service and empathy. Community service is not optional at Villanova; it is required of all enrolled students. An applicant whose service work is substantive and reflective is demonstrating alignment with the educational model, not padding a resume. Shallow service-trip narratives without sustained engagement read as exactly that.

Demonstrated interest. Villanova's CDS lists level of applicant's interest as a Considered factor. Campus visits, alumni interviews, and supplement specificity all register. In a saturated Northeast pool competing against Boston College, Georgetown, Notre Dame, and Holy Cross, yield protection matters to the office.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional for 2026-27. Villanova has confirmed it will remain test-optional through the 2026-27 admission cycle, covering the Class of 2031. Non-submitters face no structural disadvantage in how files are read. For students who do submit, the enrolled mid-50 percent ranges are SAT 1410 to 1490 and ACT 32 to 34.

Pope Leo XIV is a Villanova alumnus. His 2025 election generated significant press coverage naming Villanova as a leading Catholic university. Analysts expect a visibility boost in the Class of 2030 application cycle. The office's review criteria have not changed, but a larger applicant pool could modestly tighten competition, particularly in the most selective colleges.

Villanova is expanding its class size. The university has stated a goal of growing its undergraduate enrollment beyond 7,000 students. The Class of 2029 overall acceptance rate was 27.4 percent, modestly higher than recent cycles, partly reflecting this expansion. Applicants near the qualification boundary may see slightly improved odds compared to the most selective recent years.

Geographic diversity is an active priority. The Class of 2029 pool included students from 49 states and 69 countries speaking 125 languages. The office has named multicultural representation as a community strength. Applicants from underrepresented states or international backgrounds receive active recruitment attention.

Essays

Villanova requires the Common App personal statement and one supplemental response of approximately 250 words. Applicants choose one of five prompts. All five are framed by Augustinian values; none is a generic college essay.

The five prompts for 2026-27:

  • Drawing on Pope Leo XIV's words about bearing the world's challenges together: what have you done to advance equity and justice in your community?
  • A lesson in life you have learned that you would want to share with others at Villanova.
  • "Villanova" means "new home." Why do you want to call Villanova your new home?
  • How do you see technology helping you to lead, serve, and contribute to the common good, grounded in Villanova's Augustinian mission?
  • "Each of us strengthens all of us." Describe a time when someone borrowed some of your strength in their time of need.

The 250-word limit rewards specificity. Readers respond to a single concrete scene or moment, not a survey of accomplishments. Every prompt is an invitation to write about reciprocal relationships and community contribution. An essay centered on individual achievement without a relational dimension misses the institutional framing.

Villanova's supplement page states explicitly that essays must be the original work of the applicant, unaided by artificial intelligence, and that submissions found to violate this may result in denial or rescission. Stylistically flat or unusually polished 250-word responses attract scrutiny.

Applicants to VSB, Nursing, or Engineering should treat the supplement as college-specific writing. Naming a specific program, course, or resource in your target college is the baseline, not a bonus.

Common misreads

Using the overall 25 percent rate as your odds. That figure blends five colleges with very different selectivity and a large ED pool. VSB and Nursing applicants face rates closer to 11 to 16 percent. RD applicants in the Northeast pool compete for a smaller seat count after ED fills roughly half the class.

Treating Villanova as a backup to BC or Notre Dame. Demonstrated interest is a Considered factor. An application with no campus visit, no alumni interview attempt, and a supplement that could have been written for any Catholic university reads as low-yield. The office protects yield, and thin engagement shows.

Writing a service narrative without sustained engagement. A single service trip or a list of volunteer hours does not satisfy Caritas as the office reads it. Villanova requires service of all enrolled students. Applicants who describe service as a formation experience, not a resume line, are writing into the right frame.

Centering the essay on individual achievement. Every supplement prompt is relational. An essay about winning, overcoming, or excelling in isolation misses what Villanova is asking. The prompts use words like "neighbor," "borrowed strength," and "each of us." The framing is mutual, not solo.

Performing Catholic identity without substance. Villanova is Augustinian, not generically Catholic. An essay that adopts Catholic-identity language without engaging the specific Augustinian relational framework reads as instrumental. The office has seen this pattern and notes it.

Notable programs

Villanova admits directly into five colleges. Per-college admit rates are not published officially, but third-party estimates based on available data suggest the following relative selectivity: the Villanova School of Business at approximately 11 to 13 percent, the College of Nursing at approximately 13 to 16 percent, the College of Engineering at approximately 16 to 19 percent, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at approximately 20 to 25 percent. Treat these as relative selectivity indicators, not confirmed current rates.

The College of Nursing requires direct admission; transfer into Nursing after enrollment is restricted. VSB applicants should expect a supplement that names specific VSB programs and curriculum. Engineering applicants benefit from a transcript that shows sustained math and science rigor aligned with their intended major.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
