Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
UVA's published admit rate is 17%. Almost no applicant faces that number. As a public university with a constitutional commitment to Virginia residents, UVA admitted in-state students at roughly 22% and out-of-state students at roughly 10% for fall 2026 entry. Those are functionally separate pools. Dean of Admission Greg Roberts has said publicly that residency is a major factor in the review, and UVA's own statistics page states the university seeks to maintain a two-thirds majority of Virginians in its enrolled student body.
The second structural fact is school-based admission. First-year applicants choose a target school at submission: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the School of Architecture, the School of Nursing, or Kinesiology within the School of Education and Human Development. Each school reads its own applicants. The McIntire School of Commerce and the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy are not first-year entry points; students apply internally after completing roughly two years in CAS or SEAS.
UVA's application volume surged 27% for the Class of 2030, driven by a 45% jump in out-of-state Regular Decision applications. The GPA bar is effectively higher than it has ever been.
Rigor of secondary record and GPA. UVA's Common Data Set rates course rigor, GPA, and character as its most important factors. The enrolled mid-50% GPA range is 3.80 to 4.00. Rigor is the first filter; everything else differentiates among students who clear it.
Character, honor, and integrity. Dean Roberts has anchored UVA's admissions philosophy in Jeffersonian ideals of honor, integrity, and character. UVA's Honor System is peer-enforced with a single sanction and is a defining structural feature of student life. The review reflects that culture. Essays that reveal how an applicant thinks about responsibility and community read better than those that do not.
Intellectual curiosity beyond the classroom. The Echols Scholars program, which mirrors the broader admissions evaluation, explicitly looks for academic excellence, intellectual leadership, and evidence of the ability to grapple with complex topics. A strong-but-generic profile without a distinctive intellectual pursuit underperforms, particularly for out-of-state applicants.
Fit with the target school. Coursework, activities, and written presentation should align with the school you chose. Engineering applicants are read against an engineering-shaped peer pool. Nursing applicants face a committee screening for authentic vocational commitment, not general healthcare interest.
Access and community contribution. UVA's SuccessUVA initiative and the 2030 strategic plan elevate access as an institutional priority. First-generation status, rural Virginia context, and limited school resources are read as context. State residency is itself rated very important in the Common Data Set.
Testing is optional. UVA confirmed test-optional status for fall 2026 admission. Among students who submitted scores in recent cycles, the mid-50% SAT range was 1410 to 1520 and the mid-50% ACT was 32 to 35. The majority of recent applicants chose not to submit scores, which means holistic factors carry the bulk of evaluation weight for non-submitters. Competitive scores within those ranges, when submitted, provide a positive signal.
No supplemental essay for most applicants. UVA removed its general supplemental essay prompt beginning with the 2025-26 cycle. A university spokesperson tied the change to reducing applicant burden during a high-volume application season. The Common App personal statement is now the dominant written signal for nearly all applicants. The sole exception is the School of Nursing, which requires a 250-word essay about a health care-related experience.
ED carries a real advantage. UVA's most recently reported ED admit rate is approximately 28% against a blended overall rate of 17%. The binding commitment signals first-choice intent and produces a measurable rate difference. EA is non-binding and shares the November 1 deadline; UVA states that no plan carries an advantage over another for EA and RD, but the ED rate differential is documented.
Application volume is rising sharply. Total applications for the Class of 2030 reached 82,118, up 27% year over year. Out-of-state RD applications rose 45%. The out-of-state pool is now peer-competitive with UNC, UCLA, and Berkeley for non-resident selectivity.
UVA's 2026-27 essay prompts have not yet been published. The information below reflects the current cycle structure confirmed by UVA.
For 2026-27, the large majority of applicants submit only the Common App personal statement. UVA has never required a Why UVA essay, and the dean's Notes from Peabody blog told applicants the personal statement does not need to name UVA or an intended major. Authenticity of voice is the stated standard. Essays that are flatly competent but reveal nothing about character or intellectual instinct read as weaker than essays that take a narrative risk.
The personal statement now carries the full weight of written self-presentation: character, intellectual curiosity, leadership instinct, and what the applicant will bring to the community. Prior-cycle prompts asked what about an applicant's background would serve as a source of strength for themselves or others at UVA. That prompt has been retired, but the underlying value it reflected persists in the review.
School of Nursing only: A 250-word essay describing a health care-related experience or significant interaction that deepened interest in nursing. The committee screens for authentic vocational commitment. A specific moment that changed or deepened the applicant's understanding of nursing as a form of care reads better than a general statement of career interest.
Using the overall admit rate as your odds. Out-of-state applicants face a structurally separate and much more competitive pool. The 17% blended rate is not the relevant number for a non-Virginia resident. Dean Roberts has said explicitly that averaging in-state and out-of-state rates is misleading.
Stats without intellectual curiosity. A strong GPA and high rigor clear the first filter. They do not differentiate. UVA's review, as reflected in the Echols Scholars criteria, looks for evidence of intellectual leadership and the ability to grapple with complex topics. A profile of scores and titles without a distinctive intellectual pursuit underperforms, especially out of state.
Treating McIntire as a first-year business school. McIntire does not admit first-year students. Applicants who want McIntire apply to CAS or SEAS first, then reapply internally in their second year. The internal admit rate for McIntire's incoming 2025 class was approximately 5.5%. First-year UVA admission is the gate; McIntire selectivity compounds on top of it.
Ignoring the Honor System in written presentation. UVA's Honor System and student self-governance are structural features of the institution, not marketing. Essays that praise Charlottesville, basketball, or Public Ivy prestige without engaging the Honor Code or Jeffersonian values signal that the basic research was not done.
Assuming EA carries the same advantage as ED. UVA states that EA and RD carry no advantage over each other. ED is the round with a documented rate differential. Applying EA instead of ED when UVA is a genuine first choice leaves that advantage unused.
UVA does not publish per-school admit rates. The figures below are derived from Class of 2028 RD admit distributions and should be treated as relative size indicators, not selectivity rates.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest pathway: approximately 74% of RD admits in the Class of 2028 enrolled in CAS. The School of Engineering and Applied Science accounted for roughly 20% of RD admits. Architecture, Nursing, and Kinesiology are small cohorts, together representing under 7% of RD admits in that class.
Two programs require a second application after matriculation. McIntire School of Commerce admits students internally in the spring of their second year; the internal admit rate for the incoming 2025 class was approximately 5.5%, making it among the most competitive undergraduate business transfers in the country. The Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy similarly admits after roughly 60 credits, with an accelerated five-year BA and MPP option available.
Within SEAS, all applicants are automatically considered for the Rodman Scholars program, which mirrors the Echols Scholars program in CAS. Both are automatic consideration for the top approximately 5% of admitted students in their respective schools; no separate application is required.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
