University at Buffalo (SUNY) reports an overall admit rate of about 57%. That number is a blend, and for most readers it is the wrong number to focus on. UB is the largest campus in the SUNY system, and its most competitive programs admit at rates well below the university average. The School of Management direct admit, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Pharm.D. direct-entry program each carry a meaningfully harder bar than 57% implies.

New York residents have a structural advantage. In-state students access SUNY tuition, which is among the strongest in-state price points in the Northeast, and the state budget for fiscal year 2027 includes a continued tuition freeze backed by new direct state support. The overall admit rate carries a moderate in-state preference, though UB does not publish separate resident and non-resident rates.

UB enrolled 5,019 first-year students in fall 2025, a record by 822 students, against more than 45,000 applications. The College of Arts and Sciences grew 30 percent and the School of Nursing doubled. That scale matters: UB is not interchangeable with smaller SUNY campuses like Binghamton or Geneseo. Its research investment, specialty program breadth, and institutional anchors in AI and entrepreneurship set it apart.

What this school values

Academic record and course rigor first. UB's published review process names academic performance and rigor of curriculum as the primary signals. The fall 2025 entering class averaged a 92 on a 100-point high school scale, roughly 3.7 to 3.8 on a 4.0 scale, with a rising average SAT score. A strong transcript is the foundation; everything else is secondary.

Fit with the specific program. For the School of Management, SEAS, and the Pharm.D. direct-entry track, UB reads coursework and sustained engagement as evidence of genuine preparation. AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Biology or Chemistry are the expected signals for engineering and pharmacy applicants. Business engagement matters for SOM. A specialty application without supporting coursework is a common denial pattern even when the general admit bar is cleared.

Access and community contribution. Thirty percent of UB's fall 2025 class are first-generation college students. More than a third are Pell-eligible. The provost office has formally committed to holistic admissions designed to increase underrepresented student enrollment. First-generation status and limited school resources are read as context, not deficit.

Breadth of engagement. UB's admissions language describes students who excel academically, engage in extracurricular activities, and maintain a good school-life balance. Activities are read as context markers alongside the transcript, not as a separate competitive dimension.

Institutional alignment. Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Christopher Connor has publicly anchored UB's identity in its flagship research mission, the Empire AI consortium, the Department of AI and Society, and the Blackstone LaunchPad entrepreneurship hub. Applicants who can connect their interests to named programs and resources at UB read as having done the research.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional. UB confirms that standardized test scores are not required for admission or scholarship consideration for the current cycle. If submitted scores do not accurately reflect an applicant's potential, UB states they will not be used in review. This policy is fully in place for 2026-27 applicants.

Record enrollment, rising competition in key programs. The fall 2025 class was the largest in UB history. SEAS enrolled 1,414 first-year students. Applications exceeded 45,000 for roughly 3,500 seats in the entering class. Growth in applications has concentrated pressure on the most subscribed programs.

EOP pathway for eligible New York residents. The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program provides an alternative admission pathway for New York State residents who have faced educational and economic barriers. A 2025 policy revision now issues EOP admission offers earlier, pending financial verification rather than after it, giving students more time to complete documentation. A new EOP Grant Fund provides up to $2,500 per year for the highest-achieving EOP students.

Early Action carries priority benefits. EA submission by November 1 triggers priority response and priority merit scholarship consideration. The Honors College has a separate selection process with its own earlier deadline and a stronger academic bar than general admission.

Deadlines

  • Early Action: November 1, 2026. Non-binding. Priority merit scholarship consideration. Enrollment deposit not due until May 1.
  • Regular Decision: February 1, 2027. Non-binding.
  • Honors College: Separate application with its own deadline; check the Honors College directly, as it is earlier than the general EA window.

Essays

For 2026-27, UB requires only the Common App personal statement for general undergraduate admission. There is no school-specific supplement for the general applicant pool.

The one substantive additional essay requirement is the Honors College supplement, which asks applicants to describe their values and what they would contribute to the UB community. Word limit is 500. For Honors applicants, this essay is the primary differentiating document. Readers are looking for evidence of intellectual engagement and a clear sense of the student as a contributor, not a credential-seeker.

Because there is no general supplement, the personal statement and the activities section carry the full weight of character and program motivation. For applicants targeting SEAS, SOM, or the Pharm.D. track, the personal statement is the appropriate place to articulate a specific reason for that program and connect it to coursework or experience. Generic framing about UB as a SUNY option underperforms. Naming specific programs, research centers, or institutional anchors like the Empire AI consortium or the Blackstone LaunchPad signals that the research was done.

UB does not track demonstrated interest. Campus visits and event attendance are not admissions factors. The application is evaluated on its own merits.

Common misreads

Using the 57% overall rate as a personal estimate. That figure blends a wide range of programs and residency statuses. SEAS, SOM direct admit, and Pharm.D. direct entry are materially more competitive. Out-of-state applicants face a harder pool than the blended rate suggests.

Treating UB as a fallback SUNY. Thin applications that signal the school is a safety choice underperform the expected admit rate. UB's scale, research investment, and specialty program competitiveness distinguish it from smaller SUNY campuses. Readers notice when an application does not engage with what makes UB distinct.

Applying to Pharm.D. direct entry without the supporting record. Strong science coursework and demonstrated pharmacy or clinical exposure are the baseline for Pharm.D. consideration. General admission to UB does not carry over to direct-entry pharmacy. This is one of the most common denial patterns in specialty programs.

Skipping Early Action. EA submission by November 1 triggers priority merit scholarship consideration. Waiting for Regular Decision forfeits that advantage without any benefit to the application itself.

Writing a generic personal statement. With no supplement required, the personal statement is the only place to connect a specific interest to specific UB programs. A statement that could apply to any large public university misses the opportunity entirely.

Notable programs

UB does not publish per-program admit rates. The School of Management direct admit, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Pharm.D. direct-entry program are all described by UB as more competitive than the university's overall 57% rate. SEAS enrolled 1,414 first-year students in fall 2025, the largest single-college cohort in the entering class.

The UB Honors College operates separate selection with a stronger academic bar and an earlier deadline than general admission. Honors students access additional research opportunities, faculty mentorship, and residential resources. The Honors College supplement essay is required and is the primary differentiating document for that pool.

The College of Arts and Sciences grew 30 percent in fall 2025 to 1,203 first-year students. The School of Nursing doubled to 285 students. UB houses the Empire AI consortium, the Department of AI and Society, and the Blackstone LaunchPad Startup and Innovation Collaboratory, which are the institutional anchors most prominently featured in UB's public recruitment identity.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
