Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Tulane's overall admit rate is 14%. That number understates how much the application round matters. For the Class of 2029, roughly half the enrolled class came through binding Early Decision. The ED admit rate is 59.4%. The Regular Decision rate, by the math of seats remaining, lands in the single digits. The round you choose is the most consequential structural decision you will make on this application.
Tulane is a private university in New Orleans with about 1,850 students per entering class. It is not a public university, so there is no in-state versus out-of-state split. What does define the pool is demonstrated commitment: Tulane explicitly weights demonstrated interest, and its admissions office has built a class structure that rewards applicants who treat it as a first choice rather than a fallback.
One institutional fact shapes every part of the application: all Tulane undergraduates are required to complete at least one service-learning course before the end of their fifth semester, with a 20- or 40-hour community placement. This is a graduation requirement, not an extracurricular. In 2026, Tulane earned the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement. President Fitts has said the futures of Tulane and New Orleans are linked in a way few universities can claim. Applicants who do not know this requirement exists before they apply are already misreading the school.
Rigor and GPA. Tulane's Common Data Set rates rigor of secondary record and academic GPA as very important. Among enrolled students who submitted scores, the mid-50% SAT range is 1430 to 1500 and the ACT range is 32 to 34. Scores are one signal among several, not the primary filter.
Volunteer work and sustained service. Tulane is unusual among selective universities in rating volunteer work as a very important factor alongside GPA and rigor. One-off service hours do not satisfy this criterion. Sustained, structured engagement with a community problem does. This reflects the service-learning graduation requirement, not a preference for resume padding.
Extracurricular depth. Activities are rated very important. Tulane reads for leadership and civic engagement within activities, not for the prestige of the organization. A student who has run one sustained community project carries more weight than one with a long list of brief memberships.
Fit with New Orleans and the institution's anchor identity. Tulane describes itself as an anchor institution in New Orleans. Applicants who understand what that means, and who can connect their academic interests to community impact in a specific way, signal genuine fit. Applicants who treat New Orleans as a backdrop or a lifestyle feature do not.
Demonstrated interest. Tulane weights demonstrated interest explicitly. Campus visits, virtual event attendance, and direct contact with the admissions office are all signals. An ED application is the strongest single signal of genuine first-choice commitment.
No supplemental essay this cycle. Tulane paused its Why Tulane supplement for 2026-27. Dean of Admissions Shawn Abbott told counselors the essay was removed partly because of concern it discouraged some strong applicants and partly because of the rise of AI-generated submissions. Only the Common App personal statement is required. That shifts more weight onto the activities section, the service record, and the overall narrative the application tells.
Testing remains optional for general admission. About 60% of enrolled students in the Class of 2029 did not submit scores. The test-optional policy functions as a genuine option: essays and activities carry proportionally more weight for non-submitters. Two exceptions apply this cycle. The Pathways to Medicine combined BA/MD program now requires standardized test scores. And Tulane now lists test scores or AP/IB/A-level results as a preferred credential for merit scholarship consideration, a change from prior cycles. Applicants competing for merit aid have a reason to submit scores even if they would otherwise choose not to.
ED fills the class. Approximately half the Class of 2029 enrolled through ED. The ED admit rate is 59.4% against 14% overall. Tulane has reported a record number of ED applicants for three consecutive cycles. RD seats are limited, and the RD pool includes deferred ED applicants alongside new applicants.
First-generation enrollment is growing. The Class of 2029 enrolled 15% first-generation students and 14% Pell Grant recipients, up for at least three consecutive years. First-generation status and limited school resources are read as context in the file.
For 2026-27, Tulane requires only the Common App personal statement. The Why Tulane supplement used in prior cycles has been paused for this cycle. Dean Abbott cited both applicant access concerns and the prevalence of AI-generated writing as reasons for the change.
With no supplement, the personal statement carries the full weight of voice, intellectual character, and fit. Tulane readers are looking for a student whose academic curiosity connects to community impact. A personal statement that reads as a credential inventory, without a specific intellectual claim or a thread of civic engagement, does not tell the story Tulane values.
The activities section becomes more important when there is no supplement. Service and civic engagement entries should be ordered and described to make the depth and continuity of that work clear. A reader who sees sustained, structured community work in the activities list, paired with a personal statement that shows intellectual curiosity and a specific interest, has the full picture Tulane wants. A reader who sees neither has very little to work with.
Tulane's Common Data Set rates volunteer work as very important, which is uncommon among selective universities. That rating should inform how applicants frame their activities descriptions, not just their essays.
Treating Tulane as an RD safety. Applicants with strong stats who apply RD and expect the 14% overall rate to apply to them are misreading the pool. With roughly half the class filled through ED, RD seats are limited and the RD pool is competitive. Strong stats alone do not compensate for the structural disadvantage of a non-binding late application.
Assuming New Orleans references equal demonstrated fit. Mentioning Mardi Gras, jazz, or the food scene in a personal statement does not signal institutional fit. Tulane's identity is anchored in public service and community engagement. Applicants who engage that identity specifically, and who show they understand the service-learning graduation requirement, read as aligned. Applicants who treat New Orleans as a lifestyle draw do not.
Not knowing the service-learning requirement. One service-learning course with a community placement is required for graduation. Applicants who are surprised by this in the application process signal a poor fit to readers. Applicants who reference it as something they actively want are signaling the opposite.
Skipping the supplement because it is labeled optional. The Why Tulane essay is paused this cycle, so this does not apply to 2026-27. But the underlying logic carries forward: when Tulane offers optional components, submitting them has historically been the norm among admitted students, not the exception.
Submitting scores only for general admission consideration. Applicants competing for merit scholarships should know that Tulane now lists test scores as a preferred credential for merit review. Choosing not to submit scores is a legitimate option for general admission but may affect scholarship eligibility.
Tulane does not publish per-program or per-school admit rates. The university admits into five undergraduate schools: the School of Liberal Arts, the School of Science and Engineering, the A. B. Freeman School of Business, the School of Architecture, and the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Applicants indicate a school and intended major at the time of application.
One program has a distinct admissions structure. The Pathways to Medicine program is an invitation-only combined BA/MD track that now requires standardized test scores for the 2026-27 cycle, even though general admission remains test-optional. Applicants interested in this program should confirm current requirements directly with the admissions office, as the invitation-only structure means it operates outside the standard application process.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
