Indiana University Bloomington's overall admit rate is about 77.5%. That number is accurate and almost beside the point for most readers of this page. The school's two most-sought programs, the Kelley School of Business and the School of Nursing, are designated limited-capacity programs with substantially higher bars. Kelley direct admit ran 34.1% for fall 2024, with an average admitted SAT of 1439. The Jacobs School of Music admits on audition alone, at conservatory-tier selectivity. If you are applying to any of these three programs, the overall rate does not describe your pool.

IU does not publish separate in-state and out-of-state admit rates. What it does publish is a clear structural preference: the university describes its goal as becoming the premier flagship destination for Indiana students, enrolled its largest-ever incoming class in fall 2025 with half from Indiana, and launched two new need-based grants in 2026 exclusively for Indiana residents. Out-of-state applicants compete in a pool where the academic profile has risen sharply, with 43% of fall 2025 new undergraduates holding a 4.0 GPA, drawn from more than 81,000 applications.

IU is also test-optional. Forty-five percent of fall 2025 admits applied without scores. That figure is materially higher than most peer flagships and reflects a real policy, not a marketing posture.

What this school values

Academic rigor in context. IU reads the transcript as presented, including weighted GPA if the school computes and reports one. Rigor of coursework is the first filter. The office does not independently recalculate GPA but uses the school report for context. A strong upward trend or a rigorous course load in a resource-limited school is read as a positive signal.

Specific fit with IU's residential identity. IU's admissions office describes holistic review as always looking for reasons to admit. The supplemental essay asks what you plan to pursue at Indiana University specifically. Readers distinguish applicants who name Hutton Honors College, Wells Scholars, a living-learning community, or a named department from those who submit a generic Big Ten essay. Bloomington's residential college-town identity is distinctive; the office expects applicants to know that.

Program-level fit for selective schools. Kelley and Nursing applicants are simultaneously applying to IU and to a limited-capacity program. The essay and the Kelley Prospect Inventory are read for a clear, specific rationale, not a general interest in business or healthcare. Jacobs applicants are evaluated almost entirely on audition and pre-screening recording; academic profile is secondary to conservatory-level preparation.

Supplemental context and leadership. Recommendations are optional but accepted. The office explicitly states that leadership, extracurriculars, service, and work experience are considered when provided. Applicants who include this material give readers more to work with. The essay also invites disclosure of unusual circumstances or obstacles, and the office frames that invitation as a genuine evaluation factor.

Access as a stated priority. IU runs dedicated outreach for Indiana's 21st Century Scholars, waives the application fee for that cohort, and launched the Crimson Commitment Grant and Hoosier Crossroads Grant in 2026 to cover tuition and fees for Indiana residents with family income at or below $80,000. First-generation status and limited school resources are read as context.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional and the policy is real. IU's test-optional policy is not a pandemic holdover. Forty-five percent of fall 2025 admits applied without scores. The mid-50% SAT range for submitters is 1150 to 1360; ACT is 24 to 31. For Kelley direct admit, scores remain a meaningful signal: the average admitted SAT was 1439, well above the general range. Applicants targeting Kelley with strong scores should submit them.

Early Action is the preferred path. The November 1 EA deadline is non-binding and explicitly encouraged by the office. EA applicants receive decisions by January 15 and are considered for the highest academic scholarships. The office notes that 21st Century Scholars are particularly encouraged to apply EA. Updated test scores submitted by January 15 are accepted for additional scholarship review.

Kelley's internal deadline is earlier than EA. The Kelley Prospect Inventory is due November 15 for a January 15 decision. Submitted by February 15, the decision comes by April 17 on a rolling basis. Because Kelley is limited-capacity, April decisions are often denials by capacity rather than by academic profile. The November 15 KPI deadline is the operative deadline for serious Kelley applicants.

Academic profile is rising. Fall 2025 enrolled the second-largest class in IU history and the most academically accomplished, with 43% holding a 4.0 GPA. Applications systemwide are up 17.3% since 2024. The bar for competitive programs is higher than historical data suggests.

New guaranteed admission pathway for Indiana residents. Beginning with spring 2026 high school graduates, Indiana residents who earn the state's Enrollment Honors Plus Seal diploma and apply by November 1 receive guaranteed admission under the Indiana Resident Admissions program. IU states it does not expect this pathway to change selectivity for Indiana residents generally.

Deadlines

  • Early Action: November 1, 2026. Non-binding. Decisions by January 15, 2027. Required for highest academic scholarship consideration. Updated test scores accepted through January 15 for scholarship review. Strongly encouraged for 21st Century Scholars.
  • Kelley Prospect Inventory (KPI) priority deadline: November 15, 2026. Separate from the IU application. Submission by this date yields a Kelley direct-admit decision by January 15. Submission by February 15 yields a rolling decision by April 17; late decisions are often capacity denials.
  • Regular Decision: February 1, 2027. Non-binding. Decisions by March 15, 2027.

Essays

IU requires one short essay of 200 to 400 words, submitted through the Apply IU platform. Common App applicants submit the Common App personal statement instead. The IU-specific prompt asks you to describe your academic and career plans and the specific opportunities at Indiana University you are eager to pursue. It also invites, but does not require, disclosure of unusual circumstances, challenges, or obstacles and how you overcame them.

This is a forward-looking prompt, not a reflective personal narrative. The office expects you to name specific IU resources: a named honors program, a living-learning community, a department, a research center, or a scholarship pathway. Two or three named specifics read as genuine research. A general statement of enthusiasm for IU reads as a substitution template.

The essay also functions in merit scholarship review. The office states explicitly that the brief essay may be used for scholarship consideration. That dual purpose raises the stakes of the word count.

Kelley applicants complete the Kelley Prospect Inventory separately. The KPI covers academic interests, leadership, and Kelley-specific fit. It is not a substitute for the IU supplement; both are read. Applicants who write a strong KPI and a generic IU supplement are underserved if they are denied Kelley direct admit and fall back to the general pool.

Recommendations are optional. One counselor and one teacher recommendation are accepted. A strong recommendation from a teacher who can speak to intellectual curiosity, leadership, or character can strengthen an otherwise thin non-academic profile.

Common misreads

Applying to Kelley using the overall IU admit rate as a benchmark. IU's 77.5% overall rate does not describe Kelley direct admit, which ran 34.1% for fall 2024 with an average admitted SAT of 1439. Many applicants are admitted to IU as pre-business and denied Kelley direct admit, a meaningful distinction they did not anticipate.

Treating the IU supplement as secondary to the Kelley application. Out-of-state Kelley applicants who write a strong KPI and a generic IU supplement are exposed if denied Kelley direct admit. The fallback to the general IU pool depends on the quality of the IU supplement, which is read on its own terms.

Submitting the Kelley Prospect Inventory after November 15. The KPI submitted by February 15 yields a rolling decision by April 17. Because Kelley is limited-capacity, late decisions are often capacity denials rather than academic ones. The November 15 date is the operative deadline.

Writing a generic Big Ten essay. IU readers identify substitution templates quickly. An essay interchangeable with Penn State, Iowa, or Michigan State does not demonstrate fit with Bloomington's specific residential identity, honors programs, or named communities. The prompt asks what you will pursue at Indiana University; the answer should be specific to IU.

Assuming test-optional means test-irrelevant for Kelley. The general IU test-optional policy is genuine. For Kelley direct admit, the average admitted SAT of 1439 signals that scores remain a meaningful input. Applicants with strong scores targeting Kelley should submit them.

Overlooking the Jacobs audition structure. Jacobs admits on audition. A strong academic profile without conservatory-level preparation does not produce a Jacobs admit. Conversely, Jacobs can admit students whose academic profile falls below IU's general bar when audition strength carries the decision.

Notable programs

The Kelley School of Business is IU's most consequential selective program for general applicants. Kelley direct admit ran 34.1% for fall 2024 (fall 2024 vintage) with an average admitted SAT of 1439. Direct admits receive immediate Kelley advising, priority course registration, and early access to career programming. Kelley is ranked in the top 10 for undergraduate business nationally. Applicants denied direct admit may be admitted to IU as pre-business, eligible to apply to Kelley after meeting academic requirements during freshman year.

The Jacobs School of Music is among the most selective music conservatories in the country, with admitted students comparable to those at Curtis, Eastman, and Juilliard in specific instrument studios. Jacobs does not publish admit rates. Admission is audition-based; a pre-screening recording is required before the live audition. Academic profile is secondary to audition strength. Jacobs offers BM, BA, and BS degree paths.

The School of Nursing is also a limited-capacity program with competitive intake. Applicants must list Nursing as their first-choice major. Those not admitted directly are considered for their second-choice program.

For all limited-capacity programs, applicants must designate a first and second choice major on the IU application. A limited-capacity program may only appear as the first choice. The second-choice designation is how IU manages demand when a limited-capacity first choice is not granted.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
