Franklin & Marshall College admits about 38% of applicants overall. That number is real, but it obscures the most important structural fact: roughly half the class fills through binding Early Decision rounds before Regular Decision files are read. The RD pool is smaller and more competitive than the headline rate suggests.

F&M is a small liberal arts college in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, founded in 1787. It enrolls about 2,300 undergraduates in a residential system built around five College Houses, each with a distinct identity. About 20% of students come from outside the United States, a share that is high for a college of its size. The 9-to-1 student-faculty ratio and average class size of 18 reflect an institution built for close intellectual engagement.

For Pennsylvania residents with family incomes at or below $75,000, F&M's new Commonwealth Commitment makes tuition free. Families earning between $75,000 and $150,000 pay no more than the Penn State in-state tuition rate. This policy took effect for the current admissions cycle and changes the affordability math significantly for Pennsylvania families.

What this school values

Academic performance in coursework. F&M is test-optional and has been for over 30 years. In the most recent available data, only 25% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores and 9% submitted ACT scores. For most applicants, the transcript is the primary academic signal. Rigor of curriculum and grades in that curriculum carry the most weight.

Pre-professional clarity. F&M's pre-medical and pre-law pipelines are among the strongest at the liberal arts college tier. Its Government major has national standing. The office reads for applicants who have a clear direction and have engaged with the specific programs, faculty, or structures that support it at F&M. A general interest in science or politics is not the same as a demonstrated connection to F&M's pipelines.

Engagement with the residential community. The College Houses system is an institutional priority. F&M values applicants who have thought about what residential community means to them and can connect that to F&M's specific structure, not to residential life in the abstract.

Intellectual curiosity shown through writing. F&M's institutional identity centers on intellectual freedom and critical learning. Essays that explore an idea, a tension, or a question perform better than essays that recount credentials. The personal statement carries the full narrative weight this cycle.

Civic and community purpose. The Ware Institute for Civic Engagement, the Posse Foundation partnership, and the background of new president Andrew Rich all point in the same direction. Applicants who connect their education to something beyond themselves fit the institutional ethos F&M has been building toward.

Demonstrated interest. F&M offers interviews and tracks contact with admissions counselors. Campus visits, interviews, and specific references to F&M programs in application materials signal genuine fit. Generic liberal arts praise does not.

This cycle (2026-27)

Testing is optional. F&M has been test-optional for over 30 years. Submitting scores is a choice, not a requirement. If submitted, the mid-50% SAT range is 1320 to 1470 and the ACT range is 29 to 33. Applicants who do not submit scores are reviewed on coursework and grades.

Early Decision dominates class composition. Roughly 52% of F&M students apply through binding ED rounds. That means the Regular Decision pool competes for a smaller share of seats. Strong applicants who treat the 38% overall rate as their RD odds are misreading the structure.

The Commonwealth Commitment is new this cycle. Pennsylvania residents with family incomes at or below $75,000 pay no tuition. Those with incomes between $75,000 and $150,000 pay no more than Penn State in-state rates. This is a significant change in F&M's positioning for Pennsylvania families and is likely to affect the in-state applicant pool.

International aid is limited. F&M offers need-based aid to international students, which is uncommon at its size. However, the aid pool is finite. International applicants who require high levels of aid face a more competitive process as a result.

Athletic recruitment is a meaningful pipeline. F&M competes in Division III in the Centennial Conference with over two dozen varsity programs. Athletic recruits account for a meaningful share of the admitted class. Prospective student-athletes should connect with coaches early.

Essays

For 2026-27, Franklin & Marshall requires only the Common App personal statement. There is no required school-specific supplement this cycle. The personal statement therefore carries all the narrative weight: intellectual character, reason for your direction, and connection to F&M's specific programs and community.

F&M's admissions guidance emphasizes intellectual engagement with ideas over credential recounting. A personal statement that explores a question, a tension, or a moment of genuine curiosity fits the institutional ethos better than one that summarizes achievements already visible in the activity list.

When writing about activities, the expectation is specific impact or insight, not a restatement of titles held. An essay that uses a leadership role to examine an intellectual or personal tension performs better than one that simply describes the role.

F&M offers an optional additional materials section where applicants can upload video, PDFs, or other supporting context. This is not required and should not substitute for a strong personal statement.

Applicants who want to signal genuine interest in F&M specifically should reference the College Houses, pre-professional pipelines, the Government program, or the Ware Institute for Civic Engagement where those references are authentic. Generic praise for small liberal arts colleges recycles to every peer institution and signals weak research.

Common misreads

Using the 38% overall rate as RD odds. With roughly half the class committed through binding ED rounds, the Regular Decision pool is structurally compressed. High-stat applicants who skip ED and apply RD face a more competitive pool than the headline rate implies.

Treating F&M as interchangeable with peer Pennsylvania LACs. F&M's pre-medical, pre-law, and Government pipelines are its institutional differentiators. Dickinson emphasizes sustainability and global languages. An essay that could be submitted to either school without revision signals that the applicant has not engaged with what makes F&M distinct.

Writing a generic liberal arts essay. F&M's supplement history includes a Why F&M short answer. Even without a required supplement this cycle, the personal statement is still read for institutional fit. Praise for small classes and close faculty relationships applies to every LAC. References to the College Houses, specific pipelines, or named programs do not.

Assuming test-optional means tests are irrelevant. Submitting strong scores can still support an application. The policy gives applicants a choice; it does not make scores meaningless for those who submit them.

International applicants underestimating the aid constraint. F&M's commitment to international students is real, but the aid pool is limited. International applicants who need substantial financial support face a more selective process than the overall admit rate suggests.

Notable programs

F&M does not publish per-program admit rates. Its strongest institutional identities are in pre-medicine, pre-law, and Government. The Government major has national standing. The Ware Institute for Civic Engagement supports students connecting coursework to public and community purpose.

The College Houses residential system is central to campus life. Each of the five houses has a distinct identity, and engagement with that system is an institutional priority in admissions.

The Leadership Fellows program awards a four-year merit scholarship totaling $15,000 through the admissions process. Applying early is advantageous for merit consideration. The Posse Foundation partnership provides full-tuition scholarships to selected scholars from urban communities annually.

How to read these numbers

An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.

The averages above are this school's. Your odds are yours.
