Admissions data, deadlines, essays, and what this school values, in one place. Updated for the 2026-27 application cycle.
Duke's overall admit rate for the Class of 2029 was 4.8%. Every applicant applies to one of two undergraduate schools: Trinity College of Arts and Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. Each school has its own committee and its own academic culture. Choosing between them is a structural decision, not a preference.
Duke admits roughly half its class through Early Decision. The ED admit rate for the Class of 2029 was 13.8%, against 4.8% overall. For applicants who are certain Duke is their first choice, that gap is the most consequential number on this page.
Duke is need-blind for domestic applicants and meets full demonstrated need. The Carolinas Initiative, now in its third year, provides full-tuition grants to North and South Carolina residents with family incomes at or below $150,000, and covers tuition, housing, and meals for incomes under $65,000. Interim Dean Kathy Phillips credited the initiative with attracting a significant number of Carolinas applicants in the Class of 2030 cycle.
Community-minded engagement. Dean Christoph Guttentag described Class of 2027 ED admits as community-minded, eager to make a difference, and committed to the environment and sustainability. That framing is not marketing. It describes what Duke says it reads for after academic preparation is established. Sustained service, civic engagement, or environmental work with a specific community story carries weight. Generic give-back framing does not.
Fit with Trinity or Pratt. Duke's required supplement asks directly why Duke is a good match for your goals, values, and interests, and invites you to name what attracts you to Trinity or Pratt specifically. Each committee reads for alignment with its own academic culture. A record that maps clearly to engineering, applied to Trinity, gets evaluated against a peer pool it does not match.
Intellectual depth over breadth. Trinity values cross-disciplinary curiosity. Pratt values domain-specific engineering interest with evidence of building or designing. Both schools read for depth in a named interest, not a survey of accomplishments.
Humanistic depth alongside technical preparation. Duke's pre-med pipeline is one of the strongest in the country. Readers calibrate against it. A pre-med record without humanistic depth, sustained community engagement, or genuine reflection on medicine as service reads as optimization rather than calling.
Your own voice. Duke's optional Glimpse video (60 to 90 seconds) tests natural presence, not production quality. Rough and real outperforms polished and scripted. The same principle applies to written essays: over-structured prose that could belong to any applicant is a liability.
Duke remains test-optional for 2026-27. Duke has explicitly extended its test-optional policy through this cycle, stating that applicants without scores will not be disadvantaged. Duke is among the few remaining highly selective universities not requiring standardized tests as peers including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Stanford, and Cornell have reinstated requirements. Duke reviews the best score when multiple are submitted. The enrolled mid-50% SAT range is 1510 to 1570.
A new optional AI supplement was added. For 2026-27, Duke introduced an optional prompt asking applicants to describe a situation where they would or would not choose to use AI and what shapes that thinking. This reflects Duke's cross-disciplinary AI initiative and signals that ethical reasoning around emerging technology is a named interest this cycle.
ED fills roughly half the class. Duke admits approximately 50% of its class through Early Decision, among the highest ED percentages in the top-20 cohort. Once those seats are filled, the RD pool competes for the remainder. The binding commitment is real: admitted ED students must withdraw other applications.
QuestBridge match numbers continue to rise. Duke admitted a record 113 QuestBridge match students in the Class of 2029 ED round, alongside 131 first-generation students and 207 Pell Grant recipients. Duke's QuestBridge match acceptance rate is approximately 13% of finalists who listed Duke.
Duke requires two essays for 2026-27, both at 250 words.
The first asks what your impression of Duke is as a university and community, and why you believe it is a good match for your goals, values, and interests. You may include what attracts you to Trinity or Pratt specifically, or to co-curricular opportunities. This is the primary fit test. Readers expect named programs, faculty, or research structures, not general praise for Duke's reputation or campus culture.
The second required prompt asks you to describe a community defined by place, faith, family, culture, interests, or shared experience. It asks how that community has shaped you, how it has set you apart, and what you hope to bring to Duke from that experience.
Three additional 250-word prompts are optional. The first invites you to share anything that might help readers understand your viewpoints and potential contributions to Duke's living and learning community. The second asks for an example of a respectful disagreement with someone you care about and what you learned. The third asks what you have been really excited about recently. Duke's guidance is that optional prompts should only be answered if they add something meaningful that the rest of the application does not already show. Answering all three defensively is a documented negative signal.
Duke also offers an optional Glimpse video of 60 to 90 seconds. It is not required. If submitted, readers want natural presence, not a scripted monologue or a polished production.
Choosing Trinity or Pratt for the wrong reason. Some applicants pick the school they assume is less competitive or easier to transfer out of. Each committee reads for fit with its own culture. A transcript and activity list that point clearly to engineering, paired with a Trinity application, reads as a mismatch to that committee.
Treating the supplement as a prestige statement. Duke's required 250-word supplement is a fit test, not a place to praise Duke's rankings, basketball program, or campus atmosphere. Readers expect specific engagement with Trinity or Pratt programs, named faculty, or Duke's distinctive infrastructure such as DukeEngage or Bass Connections. Essays that could be transposed to any peer institution with minimal edits signal that the research was not done.
Stats and titles without community impact. Guttentag named community-mindedness and change-making as the personal qualities that distinguished Class of 2027 admits. A profile built on scores, AP counts, and leadership titles without a sustained community-impact thread misses the criterion Duke names as its differentiator.
Pre-med without humanistic depth. Duke's pre-med pipeline is strong enough that readers have calibrated expectations. A pre-med record with no humanities engagement, no reflection on medicine as service, and no sustained non-medical community involvement reads as optimization. That pattern is a documented rejection signal at Duke specifically.
Ignoring Durham. Duke is in Durham, North Carolina. Essays that treat Duke as an abstracted elite university, with no engagement with the Southern context, the Research Triangle, or the city itself, read as generic. Supplement essays that could belong to an application to Northwestern or Penn with minimal editing are a known pattern Duke readers flag.
Trinity College of Arts and Sciences enrolls roughly 80% of Duke undergraduates and offers more than 44 majors across the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and arts. The Sanford School of Public Policy and the economics department are among the strongest entry points for applicants with a quantitative-policy orientation. Trinity's estimated admit rate for the Class of 2029 RD round is approximately 5%, derived from published admit volumes against the overall rate; per-school applicant counts are not published by Duke.
Pratt School of Engineering offers six engineering majors including Biomedical Engineering, which is consistently ranked among the top three nationally. Pratt's estimated admit rate for the Class of 2029 RD round is approximately 7%, also derived from admit volumes. Pratt is the smaller school and has historically admitted at a slightly higher rate than Trinity, though both are highly selective. Internal transfer between Trinity and Pratt after admission is possible but not guaranteed.
All per-school rates above are estimates from Class of 2029 data and should be read as relative selectivity, not precise current figures.
An admit rate describes last cycle's whole applicant pool, not your odds. Your chance at this college depends on how your profile compares with the students it admitted, the round you apply in and the program you choose, which is why the same rate can mean a reach for one applicant and a target for another.
